Hello all

Had my 2008 gt s about a week and noticed a rattle/vibration noise for about 1 second only on cold start up.

I have read the following thread and my noise is the same or similar to what they get:

this only occurs on first starting up after a few days not in use and lasts about 1 second. I’m not sure if it’s something I should be concerned with as the garage said it’s normal to have this noise if left for a while?

From reading the thread above sounds like it could be the variators?

hopefully I can find some help on here

thanks

A 2008 is very likely to fall into the problem category, pre 148xxx I think, if you got the car from a dealer you may well need to be paying them a visit.

Welcome to Maserati ownership !

If your engine number falls in to the right number which went up to 2011/12 then I would speak with dealer and if they will not pay to repair then reject the vehicle. If it was a private sale then at some point you are going to need a 3k spend.. sorry.

I assume you are talking about the variators then? I will talk to the garage about this and the car is also under warranty so hopefully will cover this?

Yes variators. Hope it is covered. Engine below 148697 could be affected.

The symptoms you describe are exactly those of the problem variators. And the date and model of your car indicates as such also. So you'll want it fixed (at circa £3k) by the supplying dealer (or if they refuse, simply reject the vehicle and have your money back).

If you bought it privately and can't return it, you can ignore the problem happily for years. In fact, in warmer/summer weather the rattle won't even occur. But over time it will slowly become worse. So at some point the £3k fix will have to be done by someone.

Warranty will depend. I had to argue with them to get most of the cost as it's not internal to the engine....

Have a word with Matt (our forum founder) or Ashley at Sporsitalia. My GT has just had this done with them. Ashley is meticulous, knows the GT more than most and can advise

In short, you have to remove the bearing caps for the cams and have them machined, I understand to increase oil flow.
...to hold the pressure during start up. The common fault is the oil drains back to sump leaving the variators dry at startup.

So what's the similar (ish) issue on dry sumps? I thought the oil pressure was always on in those, so it shouldn't happen, but I'm sure I know enough about it....
