clonk from rear

Hi,
From time to time I'm getting a clonk from the rear end. I've checked the anti-roll bar mountings and they have no play. Can't find any evidence of play in various suspension bushes. I've had a suggestion that gearbox mountings go frequently on these cars. Has anyone any experience of checking/changing them?
cheers

Check the suspension arm ball joint, the plastic surround wears and you get metal on metal contact. Not heard the gearbox mountings mentioned before.

Hi Griffo, I'd be looking at the ARM mounts. They don't need to have play, but if they're dry they'll clonk as they 'snap' into balance. Bung a bit of grease in there and see how you get on. Won't do any harm.

Frank, are you meaning the wishbone ball joints or something else?

Miles, is this the pivots at the back of the wishbones?

Ball joint on front, tie rod assembly on rear not the same( has a much smaller ball type joint)...its the long slim arm on the diagram with the no 7 part listed, where it joins the main bulk of the lower suspension arm

Ahh *right*, thanks.

This is the part that Klive managed to re-engineer. If memory serves there are also some companies doing re-furb on them?

Cheers

Hi Cat, I was referring to part 35 in your second link. Different to what you're 'discussing' with Frank if you're thinking part 31, as this is the drop link. Do you have a similar issue to the OP?

Thanks Miles.

OSR has started creaking, and on the way home last night I got a small clonk from the same area.

The is not directly related to suspension movement, if that makes sense, so something is moving in relation but not at the same time.

For example when I get out, it's be a couple of seconds before there is a creaking from the rear, obviously as things 'settle'

Looks like we have the biggest suspects identified. Rather hoping it's not the tie-rod on the lower wishbone, but I guess I can cut costs by re-engineering and re-cycling. The drop link and bush that you're mentioning also seem (IMHO possibly more) likely, and they look like both a cheap an easy fix.

Can't get under it until next weekend though.

Thanks for the assistance. I'll make sure I have the camera out when I'm there.
