5.30 a double espresso, as the one year old deems it is time to get up. He then destroys a combination of bottled milk and shreddies (normally artfully sprayed around). 5.45 a Marlboro Red and 2 pieces of Toast and Marmite - for me, not the child! 6.30 double espresso number 2. Being a man of habit this is pretty much the cycle for 7 days.

Damon

Marlboro reds at 5.45 am, now that is hardcore!

Didn't they use to give porridge to prisoners?

They did and whats more, they even named their punishment after it which kind of sums up how grim it is. Five years 'hot chocolate with marshmallows' doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Porridge is only once in a blue moon now at HMPS as most are given a breakfast pack the night before...so rice crispies, a 1/4 of milk, tub of Stork SB and some Jam and bread...now lets see them make a comedy out of that menu!

Doesn't sound very funny at all.

I can understand Ian.....its very hard to see those who've abused others in many ways and indeed committed very serious crimes being cosseted for the length of their sentence.....but someone higher up the food chain makes more enlightended decisions than the rest of us....whether we agree or not

Invariably those making the enlightened decisions are not subjected to the misery inflicted by such miscreants. If they were burgled or had their wives attacked and raped they would perhaps start making decisions from a different viewpoint. We've been here before Frank and we'll have to agree to disagree.

Ian.......don't think for a second I'd he hestitating to unleash the wrath of both God and Devil on such sorts if something horrific happens mine.....................................but the situation we are curently living in has evolved over several centuries.

I would like a great deal more emphasize on the victims of crime.....................................a huge amount actually

Its a shame 5% of the population holds the rest of us to ransom and percieved perpetual fear

The system has evolved over centuries, however, when people spent 23 hours a day banged up and cr4pping in a bucket, did they commit crime just to go back in because their quality of life was better inside than out in some sink estate. I think not. There is now a greater emphasis on rehabilitation than there is on punishment. Time should be added on for bad behaviour rather than knocked off for good behaviour, life should mean life and the murder of children and policemen should be a capital offence. I could go on but I won't.

It may swing back that way as time goes by........living can be a difficult and horrible thing at the best of times........just keeping the fingers Xed and puff myself up as big as I can in certain situations......;)

FYI

Time is added onto the time prisoners spend inside, up-to 56 days for each offence.

I have worked in this area for over 24 years and I have seen the worse there is in life and retort some of the horror I have seen since I was 18 both in the Police and HMPS...But I will not make excuses for their choice. I grew up in the same city's care homes and from a v.poor family...and I think I made some good choices. But the reality is very few have had what any of us would describe as a normal life and as such its hard to see how a large proportion had any chance in achieving anything in life.

In that case, why is a 50% discount given almost as a matter of right? 10 years means out in 5, so a 56 day penalty isn't that great a burden and that is up to 56 days. Everyone has choices to make and the majority know right from wrong, some keep straight and some don't. However, if they inflict grief and suffering to others, whatever their circumstances, they should be punished. As should I or you.

Not wanting to get into an argument re 'Justice' but the current budget for the MOJ in 2011 was £8.6 billions, that's based of the current sentencing plans. If the country wants to hold all offenders for the full period of 100% then you will need to stump up the extra £8.6 billion needed, in addition the extra for the huge amount of extra staff required to contain the population that have no incentive to behave.

Given over 60% of prisoners who are either recalled to prison or serve additional days due to poor behaviour, this system is there to reduce costs not give them an easy ride...and give the state of our country I doubt we will see any change soon.
