Boomerang conversion on a 4200

You will not like the price and neither did I.... 6600 AUD exw... So you're looking at about 7000 USD shipped excluding work. It is good for the oz market and maybe some southeastern Asian ones but again it is the price of a custom job.... I am looking into this lately but purchasing the parts slowly and adding a little dyi with Chinese labor I could probably do it for less than 3k USD :) maybe that also answers your question in the other thread Contigo ;)

By the way I have about 7 years experience in manufacturing in China... What would you guys be willing to pay for brand new aftermarket boomerangs?
I am also thinking about this lately, I know good factories that could do it. The problem is the cost of plastic injection moulds. I don't think it s possible to find these for less than 1300 USD second hand. What if we could get new aftermarket ones for that price or less?
Then a dilemma comes: should you make aftermarket that fit the 4200 directly or aftermarket that fit the 3200??? For the 4200 it would probably be one extra set of moulds...
I don't think it's viable for at least less than 50 to 100 pairs sold but I could run a couple of numbers...

And while we're at it and now that I am inspired what carbon fiber parts do we need for our cars? I could do forum productions on my free time :)

Jeez, so that's about £4,400 plus labour, paint etc. Not cheap! I'd be interested to see one of their conversions (did I miss the pictures?) to see what it looks like. If it's fully reversible I'm wondering how they deal with the rear panel without puting in an extra seam where the bottom of the 4200 light would fit.

It may be cheaper to buy a pair of second hand 4200 lights and modifying them by machining and modifie them to fit the led lights of a 3200 or a custom made led cluster .

The issue with the conversion costs is volume. Manufacture sufficient amounts to make it attractive/affordable and you lose the exclusivity of a boomerang conversion. There are many who wouldn't want to modify their cars so significantly either.
I'm not convinced about the conversion any more - if the car is a keeper then no issues with resale, but many wouldn't want to buy a modified car. There are also increasing numbers of cars on the road with similar LED rear light configuration. When the 3200 was produced it was a ground breaking design and very unusual to use LEDs. I was driving through London last night and thought I caught a glimpse of a 3200 ahead. I sped up to get a better look and was met with the rear of a new Volvo! Very similar looking from a distance!

That would be very cool. There must be a market for reduced cost ones for 3200 owners with defunct reversing sensors.

There is a seam, see attached picture, but I could live with that.
The key bits of their conversion is:

"Starting with a pair of recycled genuine 3200GT boomerang tail lamps, these are cut in half then re-joined to reduce overall depth. They are next mounted on a precision laser cut steel support plate. A specially moulded GRP filler panel is then added to the support plate, to form the complete replacement tail lamp piece"

So really not much too it, once you have a design for the support plate, and a mould for the in-fill panel...

That seam ruins it for me. It might work better on a black or navy car, but it's all I'd ever notice if I'd paid that amount of cash out. I hate the red Maserati badge, looks really naff but isn't mandatory. They've also left the boot spoiler off. Fail! I'd rather stick with the original rear end of a GS, even with the Honda lights!

Yep agree, if it can't be done properly why bother? Be cheaper to buy a 3200 at that rate :D

I wonder how easy it is to reduce the depth of the original boomerang lights?
Has anyone taken one apart?
Can't see an adapter laser cut plate once this has been done being difficult, nor the in-fill panel.
Does anyone have a scrapper boomerang that could be split apart!

Why imitate a so called lesser car than a 4200?? by doing so everyone in the know, knows the old 3200GT will be a dead cert future classic!

the fitment of them doesnt look right to me, not the line at the bottom, i mean the outer edges of the lights
