The thing is

Is a slightly different phrasing to what he actually said. Which rather more than slightly changes the perceived message.
'Even with a gradual lifting of restrictions, modelling suggests, there could be another 30,000 deaths before the summer of 2022.' is, I believe closer to what he actually said. As is this:

'It was impossible to predict exactly how many would die, Prof Whitty said.
He said it would be a "significant number", though nothing like we had seen over the past year.'

C
Presumably this will disproportionately hit the individuals who have either been unable to have the vaccine for medical reasons or have voluntarily declined it?

I see Chris Whitty forecasting another wave and potentially 30,000 more deaths.
So realistically it's got to run it's course , we can't all sit around for years waiting , by the time we're officially released the most vulnerable will all have been jabbed

This lockdown is over anyway, I've been driving throughout , this is nothing like March 2020 , the motorways are about 80% of a normal weekday , it's that 20% that brings them to a stop so they are running smooth but busy

Last March I'd say 90% were at home because the roads were like a Sunday morning in 1979 even on Monday mornings

So 5 people out of c5m have reported clots... which I understand is the normal percentage of people getting a clot.

Read it was a specific batch (1 million doses) that they came from.

Italians have also stopped administering the vaccine but only doses from that batch.

From the BMJ:
'The EMA’s safety committee is reviewing the issue but said that there was currently no indication that vaccination has caused these conditions, which are not listed as side effects. It said that the information available so far showed that the number of thromboembolic events in vaccinated people was no higher than that seen in the general population. It said that, as of 10 March, 30 cases of thromboembolic events had been reported among the five million people given the AstraZeneca vaccine in the European Economic Area.'

'
Commenting on the decisions, Stephen Evans, professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said, “The problem with spontaneous reports of suspected adverse reactions to a vaccine [is] the enormous difficulty of distinguishing a causal effect from a coincidence.” He highlighted that covid-19 disease was very strongly associated with blood clotting and that there had been hundreds, if not many thousands, of deaths caused by blood clotting as a result of covid-19.

Adam Finn, professor of paediatrics at the University of Bristol, said, “The position with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine at the moment is that there is no sign anywhere, including the UK where very large numbers of doses have now been given, that blood clot related illnesses are happening any more frequently than usual.

“That’s reassuring, because it means either that the vaccine doesn’t cause blood clots at all or, at the very worst, that it’s an extremely rare event.”'

Although yes, it's interesting that they all appear to have come from one batch. Which could be indicative of something. Or it could just indicate that that was the batch being used....

Politics and optics vs science and medicine IMHO

Interesting but they are concerned here.

It's tricky to know what to do. Basically all medical authorities, including the European Medicines Agency, say that there is no evidence that there is any appreciable risk of blood clots with the vaccine, but the pretty girl on TV with a degree in media studies from the University of Winchester, whose boss has told her to up ratings by spreading alarm, says that 'there are concerns'. I think I had better post on social media that there are concerns, so that people will be more worried, some of them might be prompted to not have the vaccine and so increase their risk of both dying and spreading contagion. Yup, that will make me feel better.

Got jabbed yesterday with the AstraZeneca vaccine. Shivering like crazy and burning hot last night, but fine today. Brother-in-Law had the same one yesterday too with no side effects.

I'm booked in for a jab next week, and have told the people that I am going to play online Bridge with that evening that I may or may not be unwell (as predicted by the NHS website), so they should make allowances if I play worse than usual.

It's a mystery what is causing this need for additional reassurance. It is almost as if people are actively spreading unfounded 'concerns'.

Well, given that less than 3% die from this ( age related/ pre existing condition etc) and that total case numbers have dropped dramatically since the WHO issued its“cycling tests” advice ....causing infections to plummet, were printed why would anyone think it’s a mystery?
