Americans and Guns

I'm having a hard time believing that photo is genuine of the gentlemen in Starbucks Coffee carrying that assault type of weapon, unless he is in law enforcement, but it probably is. Here in Alabama people can "open carry" guns - which means they must be visible, not hidden. A few weeks ago my wife and I saw a guy in Walmart carrying 2 hand guns, one on each hip...just like in an old western movie! I'll admit it made me a bit uneasy, but it was legal, I can only hope that fellow didn't have any violent inclinations! I'm a conservative person but find myself agreeing with a lot of comments from the Left. We do not need to do away with access to guns, but DO need to widen the scope of the approval process - no doubt about it. I can't think if a logical argument against such actions...

I’m 58 and the only guns I’ve seen (apart from in museums) are a rifle I fired on Team Building Exercise 99, and one we ‘found’ when I was about six all rusty and full of gunk. Dead heavy though for a six year old and only a pistol, probably from the war. My dad took it off me the tight get.

Wonder why you say ‘the left’ - surely it’s not a political issue?

From an NBC report:

Ten new pro-gun laws will take effect in Texas in four weeks, less than a month after 22 people died in a mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso.
Gov. Greg Abbott signed the measures after they were passed in a 2019 legislative session that the National Rifle Association, or NRA, called "highly successful" at the time, celebrating that the measures "will further loosen Texas' permissive gun laws" and would send the "gun control crowd home empty-handed."

Looks like my steaming hat is safe for a bit then!

Yes Wanderer....poor choice of words on my part. No it's not a political issue. Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to find any U.S. news media that is politically neutral. I was just giving credit where it is due, and noting that with I support potential corrective actions without regard to my political views....as it should be.

Reasoned arguments are useless unless people are prepared to listen and those supporting or supported by the NRA aren't prepared too. The best we can hope for is that everytime one of these events happens a few more see the light and realise that carrying on the same way will have the same results.

There are really good reasons why reasoned arguments are very often useless in any environment. 3million years of evolution sadly.

Yeh............But I bet not one of them would dare tell him!!
I would! In the time it would take him to get that rifle engaged it would be possible to nick his cap, kick him in the balls and be halfway down the street. Or alternatively pull out your hidden glock and watch him struggle madly to find his trigger

In wonder what the psychological reasons are - that makes someone feel like they need to walk around in public carrying such a weapon? What does it show? How tough you are? Or...maybe how tough you aren't? Or that it is an expression of patriotism, or a way to show pride? Or just to shock people? To tweak the nose of all the people against guns?

"Lets get some something straight between us Carla"
"Oh Captain!"

5-minutes of absolute pleasure on a Saturday morning! long before the TV stuff!

"Kermit?"
"Er yes Miss Piggy?"
"You wanna listen to the radio?"
"Er yes Miss Piggy."
"You wanna listen to the Capital Radio?"......

Maybe he just didn't want to leave it in his truck? Just a thought? It's not exactly cheap.

And it's almost certainly not an 'assault' rifle. Probably a .223 Ruger SR556 semi-automatic. While plenty to do lots of damage, not something that is likely to impress say, the Marines with an SA80.

Same might be said of our cars as in 'what makes a middle age man need to drive around in that penis extension'

NB I'm not altogether in favour of anyone having access to this kind of toy (and many of our American brethren think of them as, if not playthings, certainly hobby accessories) Nor would I be entirely in favour of people being banned from driving powerful cars because there were >37k deaths on the US roads in 2016. According to the first set of figures I can fid there were something like 14k fatal gun assaults in the same year, and 23k gun suicides.

Of course there are loads of reasons why guns and cars are different, and loads of ways to cut the data.

It's also very true that Japan has far far stricter gun controls and has (I think) the lowest level of fatal gun assault. Something like 10 per year.

The results of widespread gun ownership are obvious- the facts are everywhere. IMHO it’s just nuts. ‘Bearing arms’ was granted in a totally different time. I wonder if any prominent NRA execs kids have been involved in mass shootings. Sorry. Just saying.
