Air intake ?

with the coupe that has the F430 engine, it just occured to me that we only have single air intake compared to the F360 & F430 which have one for each bank of cylinders.

I was just wondering if this is a limitation for the Mas, that 2 intake could make the engine breath better - I could be talk total cr....

good point about having only one intake is we only have to worry about 1 MAF :)

I've noticed that as well the Ferrari had two throttle bodies, not one.
Interesting that our engines produce so much power without individual throttle bodies, one per cylinder, as well.

No, a valid point Enzo, I took the self destructed airbox out of mine only last weekend and I have to say I was struck by the significant restriction the water baffle presents just inside of the stupidly located intake at the bottom of the bumper (hence all the hydrolocked engines)!

I basically need to replace the airbox or at the very least reconstruct it and provide a new service method to open and close it by.

I think the filter itself and the induction pipes are probably smaller than the effective sum of the pair on the 430 (remembering that the drag of the pipes is doubled in their case). It is not really practical to put a larger TB on our cars or the mass airflow ahead of it however it is possible to put a free flow air filter and even to divert the intake to a vertical one within the space of the radiators (main/oil/Ac) to the grille, I will be looking into this as an option for mine.

I can actually see little merit in the airbox even being there as the wing is lined and the box seems to be just adding weight and holding the standard filter in place (or not in my case)!

Newton - I would love it if you came up with a solution for the stupidly located air filter!

Strangely enough I reckon we are better placed than both the 360 and 430. Sure, they have an intake for each bank but look where they placed the air box; right over a f*ck off big silencer. The air box gets so hot you can't touch it and the air going into the engine gets very hot. Not ideal. It seems we are all compromised but they don't generally hydro lock.

To be honest, I'd rather have hot air and suffer those consequences rather than a hydrolocked engine.

True, but you are always plagued with hot air ingestion whereas you only get a hydro locked engine if you hit standing water. Therefore, don't go out in p!ss!ng rain!

When I was on my hands and knees looking through the lower intake, I noticed the air intake, with a V deflector plate shielding the filter, I guess from stones.
Wouldn't it just be easy to rip the whole lot out, including the V deflector plate, and have a K&N cylinder filter completely open to the air flow through the spoiler?

Mike, re my post #3 it is a water baffle to stop the paper standard filter getting a direct soaking but it has a serious restricting effect I'm sure.... Baffles the heck out of me anyway!

Okay I see now.
I guess the question is would it be acceptable if you use an oiled gauze filter (K&N) for it to be directly exposed to say...spray being thrown up from a lorry in the wet?

An in engine conical filter slapped straight onto the throttle body is ok as long as you fashion some ducting so cool air rushes in to it.

Remember, when at speed, the air entering the engine bay is massive, its only in traffic when problems occur or performance will be inhibited.

I personally will be doing it to my GS (as and when I get it)

There is an off the shelf aftermarket cleanable filter from (I think) BMC? this however is a direct replacement and would need the box for support. Opie oils list all of the K&N 'specials' and basically you can dial in any filter you want, just be aware it needs to be humungus to cope with a high revving big V8 :) Having taken my box out I can see loads of locations to mount a special and also loads of work needed to make the connector pipe to meet the mass air reader and screen, my thoughts are to go for a large rectangular number with at least the surface area of the existing. The fun will be making at least the one side airtight.

hmmm...good point but would like colder air, you can always wait for rain to stop :)

anther note - on the f360/f430 the air has to go back on itself, where our flow is almost front to back which will help

The Trofeo cars air filter placement is much better eliminating the air bpx is and only 1or 2 parts required - clamps maybe? When I compared the exploded parts diagram

Again airflow path or perhaps speed of the flow would seem to be the factor but worth revisting
