A recon a/c compressor supplied & fitted should be under £1k all in so hopefully no need for surgery this time James

My car had some work done local to me a couple months back and as advisory they said AC condenser was weeping, my car is in JCT as of this morning they had already checked it was covered by my warranty and it was, £1300 all in the part needing DHL'd overnight from Italy

As it happens they've pressure tested the system a couple hours ago and it's holding pressure and they said they wouldn't have even reported the 'signs' of a weep which is there but nothing to worry about just now

Not sure how much help that is but hey ho

1k?!? Ouch! LOL! I'll save the kidney for the clutch replacement and just trade in an eyeball or something.... Only really need one anyway....

Thanks everyone for the advice. I've already been phoning around. HR Owen are booked solid until August 26th for servicing! McGrath Maserati no longer deals with Granturismo's or moden Massers, because they have chosen to specialise in older cars and resto's and are booked solid for three months with work anyway.

I called Giallio, no answer on the phone
I called Verdi's, No answer on the phone

However, I now have a booking with Joe Macari, simply because they answered the phone and are not booked solid until Xmas.

They said it might simply need re-gassing as there's a cut-out switch for when the gas pressure drops too low. Either that, or the compressor needs a new clutch, bearing or actuator. Compressor itself and electronics seem to be OK. In reality, its probably driveable, however, I'm going to see if my breakdown folks will trailor it to Joe Macari for me. Failing that, it will be a seat-of-my-pants drive to Joe M on Wedsnesday, hoping I can get there before the Aux belt snaps....

Wish me luck, will update when I know more.

My A/C Clutch went on the GS whilst I was traversing the Alps. Its a simple job for any garage and mine came in at far less than 1k including recovery at a weekend and return flight to Bazel and regas

Zep off the forum had/has a spare compressor as he ordered an extra one when he got me mine.

Yes, I can hear a click when the A/C is switched on. The electronics are working, but it really looks like the Compressor clutch has siezed.

I think its a trailor to the garage job.... Might need to sell a kidney...

James

Call Supercar rooms and inform them of the issue, it has never worked effectively since you collected two weeks ago.

Surprised Giallo didn't answer. Did you wait? Sharon is normally excellent although they do have a rather dull hold message.

Ref the pulley not turning, if the clutch / compressor has seized the belt is simply slipping round it (or it's too loose)

If it's correctly tensioned, then you probably don't want to drive it.

Check the tension though as I'd expect some unpleasant noise. With the engine off, see if you can twist the belt through about 90 degrees. If it turns easily you may have lost a tensioner. It's not a foolproof method, but should give you an idea

They get busy. If they don't answer first time round, they'll usually pick up if you try again later. Unfortunately I've had to call them a lot recently..

Ok,

So my car is currently at Joe Macari in London. They went through it yesterday and here is the synopsis :

We have carried out the checks as requested please find workshop report
1. Air conditioning compressor has failed, currently back order with Maserati. We can source a replacement of the same type from another supplier. We also recommend the receiver dryer be replaced at the same time as we cannot be sure this has not contributed to the failure of the compressor. Total cost £1480.00+ Vat.
2. We have adjusted the boot lid and allowed operation from dash button all opening correctly now. £43.50+ Vat
3. Replacement key assembly. £274.50+ Vat (copy documents required to order).

As part of our free safety check please find other items requiring repair
4. Clutch dragging suspected internal failure, will require removal and investigation/replacement. £2830.00+ Vat
5. Gearbox may require replaced Fi sensor and thrust bearing, subject to inspection when clutch removed. £665.00+ Vat
6. Cooling system has original control resister fitted and showing signs of overheating recommend replaced urgently to avoid engine overheat situation. £112.00+ Vat
7. Front right tyre excessive wear on inner edge recommend replaced. £324.00+ Vat
8. Recommend front geometry once tyre replaced to get best possible life from new tyre. £145.00+ Vat
9. Driver’s seat base adjuster know adrift recommend new. £45.00+ Vat

Adding that little lot up, including VAT, comes to £6773.40..... Ouch!

I need the A/C compressor replacing, the Cooling system resistor and whatever is wrong with the seat base. Any advice on everything else? I'm assuming I can get these other things done much more cheaply elsewhere, on the basis they are not critical....?

James. Have a word with Zep off this forum. He sourced a compressor for me from the OEM Manufacturer at a 1/3 of the price from the dealer. It was then fitted by a normal garage as on the GS its not a hard job...dont know about the QP though.

Was there any sign that the clutch needed replacing before you took it in? £3.5k + VAT is a bit steep for the job - plenty of indies will do that work for less. When it's in bits, you ARE going to be replacing all the bits in there, as they are so cheap compared to having the job done again in a few thousand miles. I'd be leaving that part alone unless it's already a problem.

Tyres can be bought anywhere...

Geometry can be done by plenty of places, but not your average local Kwikjob outfit - needs a Hunter machine and someone who knows how to use it, or string and patience from a race mechanic. Full job isn't cheap though at most places, and I wouldn't just have the fronts done.

Yeah, having spoken to the mechanic there's a few things I can leave for the moment.

The compressor will be a cheaper model than the standard Maserati one anyway, because Maserati don't have any in stock and they are on back order. The additional cost is the requirement to replace the Dryer unit, that drys the air in the system, such that moist air doesn't stay in the system and screw up the new comprssor as well. So thats a non-maserati compressor, the dryer unit, the labour = £1480.00 +VAT

I'll also do the cooling resistor and the seat switch/knob.

The guy said that if its driving ok (which it is), the clutch can wait until I can notice a further problem, or until I can simply afford to replace it, which I was expecting at some point anyway in the next 6-9 months. He says its not pulling away as smoothly as it might do but its not a major issue and its not causing me or the other components any issues so its ok.

The tyre and tracking I'll do somewhere else and I'll live wihtout the spare key :)

So my total this time inc VAT is £2016.60....

I have a left kidney I'm not using if anyone is interested.....?

James, the dryer is a bog standard off the shelf unit, take it to a local motor factor and they will match it up there and then, shouldn't be over £40, it is only a baked bean tin with silica in it after all!

At least you have a starting point. All main dealers servicing prestige cars do this. A quiet chat with the service manager can help identify what really is important. Sometimes the convenience of a loan car, delivery and FMSH are worth paying for. On some things I scrabble about to save money but on others I put the cost in context of the total cost of ownership.
