That is odd, distinctly remember the GS didn't and furthermore the fuel tank was only a bottom half spot welded onto the underside of the floor directly under the rear seats! My mother was coming home from Manchester (to Buxton) one night in hers and the car filled the floor with petrol! the floor had simply rusted through, that was the end of that one! Also happened on my brother's one a couple of years later. A crazy design.

The ´73 Citroën GS Birotor, a Wankel-powered rarity that shouldn’t exist….

The rotary engine, also known as the Wankel engine, was considered the next big thing in the late 1950s, evidenced by the fact that many major manufacturers bought the license to the technology from NSU.

The technology saw interest from the motoring world because it ran smoother, was lighter and smaller, and had fewer components compared to a piston engine with similar performance. To today’s younger enthusiasts, rotary engines are almost exclusively synonymous with Mazda RX-7 or 8s, but in the 1970s you could find them in a handful of European offerings, like this lovely Citroën GS Birotor

Probably the 12th example of the 846 GS Birotor built. It seems only about fifty units survived the destruction ordered by Citroën. Less than 22,200 original km, perfect working order, almost no default on the technical inspection!

To be sold in our Sochaux auction on this Sunday October 23rd, the official Peugeot and Citroën sale, catalogue available, link in bio.

Nearly bought one of those as Ms French used to have one and regularly used to drive to Spain and back in it visiting that side of her family.

I'd rather walk than be seen in one of those death traps.
If a truck drives past you on the motorway (the other way around is hardly possible..) it's as if you're in severe turbulence with the doors and windows clattering and gaps appearing - scary indeed. Crumple zones - qu'est-ce que c'est?
