so di I have a belt tensioner?
Maybe not on cambelt, but maybe on the auxilliary belt?

yeah it will definately have a tensioner of sorts , and from what i remember the bearings in the tensioner get dry and are prone to going hope its as easy a fix as that rob

here's the eurospares exploded view rob hope it helps clearly shows the tensioner

Thanks Loz

Just had another look and listen. Took a shaky video and topped up the oil.

The belt tension might appear less, when feeling from below. Sure it used to be almost rigid, wwith very little deflection. Now I can move it an inch laterally.
Also the sound is coming from the front, and bounces off the floor to appear under the car (when door is opened). The sound changes when I press the "econ" button, which should reduce the load on the belt.

Maybe the tensioner could be the issue. Willget expert diagnosis before going any further.

made a little video nasty

the sewing machine noise is the worry. Bit of tappet noise is normal round these parts.
Note the nois persists right until engine stops turning. Tempted to try turning over the engine with the crank pulley nut. Thoughts?

I would almost definately say its belt related , whether its the ac bearing or some kind pulley/tensioner bearing , but its my feeling thats the right track

Hi Rob,

If you can get your hand down there, you could try and feel whether there's any play in the v-belt component pulleys. I'd be tempted to start with the fixed tensioner made up of parts 8 and 9 in Loz's Eurospares diagram link.

Plus one, its sounds like the aux belt or a bearing in one of the associated ancillaries to me. This is never ideal, but spray some wd40 on the ancillary drive wheels, bearings and tensioners.

ONLY DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A NEW BELT READY TO FIT.

Lub each bit one at a time and listen for a change in noise. You could also just use water, it will have the same effect but not contaminate your belt. (which would cause it to fly off)

so Dr Loz and Dr Conaero concur!

Bearings can fail at any time, on my esprit I had a odd noise 2 months after cambelt, tensioner and bearing changes. I took it to a specialist and had the belts pulled off one by one. Eventually the cambelt tensioner bearing was removed (2 months old) and this was the culprit. I`d phone whichever breakdown you are in and get them to tow it to your specialist of choice, I would not run it for long

I think there is more play in the belt than I remember. Sure it used to feel really tight, with very little deflection possible, maybe quarter of an inch. Now it moves almost an inch.
If this is the case, then could the noise be the belt slipping rather than a squealing bearing.

Will try the WD-40 test after work on wednesday, as I will be here late tonight.

If its the pulley bearings, I have a set of brand new ones I bought in error.

Thanks. Which items specifically (referrring to eurospare dia) do you have?

Will not be moving the car again, if possible, so will do any easy and cheap fix at home. Getting recovery to specialist is a royl PITA, last time the idiots tried to "fix" my torn clutch relase bearing by stamping on the pedal. This snapped the bracket holding the pedal.

Looks like fixed pulley (item 8) should be easiest and cheapest to replace.
Anyone know how long it takes to change the big tensioner (item 7)? Anyone done it?

Rob, I can't comment from experience as I drive a 4200, but I've just checked my belt tension and there's probably a quarter inch play.

Can any 3200 owners out there comment?......pop the bonnet and check their belt tension?.....

No need to pop the bonnet, just lay down and feel underneath, just to rear of the big subframe bar.

Thread update.
Car failed MOT on ABS and exhaust. Noise traced to N/S turbo, which let go, sadly beyond repair. Got a fixed price deal from really nice guys, who will get proper thanks later.
New exhaust section fabricated - good work by my local garage TWG, longthorpe, Peterborough. The sent of the ABS unit to a refurb shop (we fix anything), which it transpired could not fix it. Like several others on here, I will be left with a good ABS unit, with a blown ECU. Just need a new £1900 ABS unit, or find one cheaper than the refurb offered to TWG for £900.

My excellent parts supplier in Ireland has come up with the goods, on a try before you buy basis. How refreshing is that in the cynical world we often find these days? Big thanks to Greg Smith of PCCP, who I found on ebay, but is now my go-to-guy for anything used on a 3200.
phew!

Might even be back on the road by the end of this week.

So pleased it has all worked out for you Rob. I hope it doesn't hammer the old wallet too much and at least you have found some good guys to help keep our noble steeds on the road! Happy motoring.

Sorry to hear of your turbo dilema aand the ABS, quite a wallet bashing then. There was a smashed car on an earlier thread that was being broken up, maybe they have some bits.
