Yep; I was planning on picking this up again before the New Year but I am 1 1/2 stone lighter than this time last year so not unhappy, aim is to blitz it again from the 1st and aim is for starting with 18 this time at least.

You've done bloody well, Newton!

My "fitness commitment" has fluctuated through the year. Having seesawed from zero booze and personal trainer, to booze, fags, and kebabs, back to abstaining from booze and being back in the gym, and so on.

I'd consider my current state to be somewhat off the wagon and in need of a new year detox, but the good news is as I sit here full of sherry, wine, brandy, turkey, Christmas pud, chocolate, etc... I'm still a stone and a half lighter than this time last year.

My takeaway point is; everything is fine in moderation, have a bit off time off from the "everyday is a Saturday" drinking, and eat healthy as often as is tolerable.

Recently had my blood tested for all sorts of things and all came back clear and healthy, including cholesterol; which had improved since the last time.

So for 2020, I'll be taking much the same approach I think.

Hats off Dan and Newton as well.
At the end of the day you have to do what works for you fitting in a busy lifestyle with work taking most of our time.
A stone and half for both of you is Admirable.
Andy aka Zagotoes has got it right with the move to Ireland Well Done mate.

Seconded Phil's comments. And per Dan. Everything in moderation. My issue is that I have not been moderate this year, and that's what I need to fix.
No excuses, just need to crack on

Well I never made my 12st 10 target and now believe this not to be achievable.
I have varied between 13st 9 and 13 st2
13st 7 is the desired max according to BMI and for most of the year I have been below this.
Overall I am happy about it. I use my bike daily and control calories especially if I know beer will be involved.
I have taken up swimming in moderation twice per week and think I will be ok next year if I keep this regime in place.
I am not doing it for fitness reasons but health, i.e remain active and stave of Diabetes etc and I want to be able to walk down to the pub whenever the fancy takes me

Unfortunately I have regained every pound of weight I lost, plus a few more. As a result, right now I’m probably at my heaviest and unfittest that I’ve ever been, and it feels rubbish.

As C says, there are no excuses, and it’s an inevitable consequence of failing to exercise consistently since May, and using alcohol as self-medication to cope with a stressful six months at work. This then leads to eating too much of the wrong type of food, and at the wrong times...

I’m keen to do something about it, so am looking forward to the 2020 thread!

As far as heart rate monitors go it depends on what you want. I had a Polar for years, I used it to great affect to stop me under and over running, basically training in the best zones to improve my cardio efficiency..increasing vo2 max etc.
But it depends on what you want it for, if you have a smart watch, they do it all now, I’ve been using a chest strap with my phone on bike, just to measure heart rate.

Wahoo Tickr are good heart rate monitors as well... I have the Tickr FIT as I prefer an arm strap rather than a chest strap...

Just had a quick look at the wahoo ones on Amazon, don’t think you can fall off for £35; now a days they do far more than us normal folk need...

My eldest gave me a polar beat before last year and I couldn’t get it to register a resting beat! This lead as part of my check ups to being detected with an irregular beat so I’m thankful for that and the understanding of it. It doesn’t bother me and I am asymptomatic.

I now have and use an Apple Watch 5 which does everything I need it to do.

If anyone wants the Polar Beat; it is available for a suitable charitable donation to the bone cancer charity of this forum (Ryan’s Run etc.). This will be the main charity of Dan and my kayak adventure...

I also have not made my target, but I have lost the extra stone I piled on over the previous year, but have hovered around this weight for the last few months. Like others i seem to have a problem with the moderation button. So lose 6lb by April, and keep it off for the duration is the target.

Finally it has dawned on the Gov that we are a nation of Fatsos
What will be the outcome next week when they (Gov) announce their plans for obesity?

BTW I am still at the top of my NHS Green band for BMI which I am ok about given my circs
