As much as I love my Strad, I’d not entertain the idea of travelling across a continent in it! But it’s great for a short blat. The idea of a GT being a continent crusher stems from the 60’s and is irrelevant in the 21st Century with air travel being far cheaper, quicker and more convenient.
My more modern definition of a GT is simply a stylish, sporty but not overly so, 2 door fixed-head coupe. Whether it’s powered by petrol or electricity isn’t an issue for me.
Air travel? What's the point of that in a GT world? Its all about the journey, a bit like life itself. Using an EV will be a big issue when you travel to a deadline and can't charge the f* thing. :D
I do agree it stems from the 60's, and I do belive we should be trying our damnest to hold onto that, how clinical does life need to be?
A GT = Freedom

Complete opposite for me (but I have a GT and not a Strad). The journey for me is just as important as the destination, and my GT is a great way to complete a big journey. Having done it multiple times in my old one I can’t wait to be able to do it again. EasyJet can wait :D

I can leave my office after work on a Friday and fly to our place in Mallorca in time for supper. And fly back again after Sunday lunch, so not have to take any time off work. For about £200.
Try doing that in a GT!
Don't get me wrong, I love the romantic idea of cross continental GT driving, but in 30 years of such car ownership, I’ve only managed it once (in a Porsche 944, about 25 years ago, to the Lambo factory to see my Diablo in-build).

I’ve done it several times in a Strad (mine or Matt’s) and it makes a brilliant continent cruiser. One of the biggest things I will miss about the inevitable change that is coming would be this. I will happily drive a electric car day to day, but will cherish having something noisy for those long trips.

I'm going to put that down as lack of effort on your part ;)

Got it! It’s a lifestyle thing. Your lucky enough to have a place you can bolt to on a regular, quick and efficient basis. With that a car is not the tool. Europe for me is a once or twice a year adventure for a week or two and a chance to go for a really long drive. Completely different use case hence the (completely legitimate) difference in views.

You’ll want to get a cream for that.

Last long distance Europe trip to Switzerland we took the diesel estate, I miss having a convertible for the roof down but don’t really miss a GT, I get told off for going to fast in the Merc anyway.

That type of comfort oriented GT seldom exists now, its mostly cars like the Continental GT, S Class Coupe and arguably the LC500.

The Maserati GT has more sporting intentions especially the Stradale.

Yep, different worlds, no need for a GT, petrol, EV, or otherwise in that lifestyle, so why have one in the first place?

Last one we did was 2014. In the 4200. It was epic

This is spot on. A few years ago I was on a ferry to Europe and parked near a GranTurismo the same colour as mine. We were both with families and I was in my Disco loaded up with ****. The rest of my tribe thought he was nuts to take the GranTurismo. Much as Ewan implies it is all about the romance of the past with these GT cars. Sure if you have no kids or if you have any money left once they have emptied your piggy bank then fine but really it is not that relevant. Someone will be along in a minute to argue otherwise but most journeys in these cars are fine with a range of 200+ miles so we will still buy them when they not powered by petrol. I know I will.

Last one we did was 2018, that was epic too, I would hate the EV Market to take that away from us.

It won't as there will be a plentiful supply of charging points. All the nice hotels in Champagne, Burgundy etc will have them. Alternatively just keep a classic for these sort of runs. A friend of mine has a 1929 Bentley and seems to get around just fine on summer runs to a whole range of places.

While I neither want, nor, in fact need a chestwig, I really fancy doing another Euro roadtrip. Bordeaux is on the cards if Mexico falls through

I have a spare chestwig if you want to borrow? :D, seriously, would love a continental trip, it's well overdue.

No really really don't need one. It appears that my hair has somewhat given up growing from my head and migrated south.....
