Usually 5 bar when driving and 2.5 hot idle.
If it goes to 5 as soon as you put the ignition on its the sender unit very common fault.

It's a sender unit of the electronic type rather than capillary pressure going up to the guage on the dash.

It can be done with the correct crows foot but it doesn't take long to remove the inlet manifold which gives plenty of room.
You can then clean and remove the debris from the valley you usually find nuts and stuff from mice etc that have nested there.
Search on here as there are threads from others who have modified tools etc and pictures doing the job.

It is not often a garage is praised for Exemplary service, but I must point out one who deserves it.

I bought my 4200 from Platinum Autos and I must say they could not have done more to sort out small problems I had. So top marks to this Firm.

As a side note they have a stunning 4200 for sale, I have attached the Photo.

Re your water pump. Are you sure it’s the pump? At idle after about 3 mins the clutch releases the torque tube and you hear a rattle from underneath. Putting it in gear the rattle should stop?

Hi, No to be honest I am not sure, you can hear the squeel from the pump and when I took it to my mecanic even before I got out he said he could hear it.
From what I have read on your site it no bad thing to change it. It seems the water pump is a weak point on these cars. (feel free to add any other weak points!)
But thank you for your comments!

Hi All,

I am still waiting on the oil/water pump from Italy. Unfortunately I cannot find any info as to the fitting of the unit.

The general consensus on the forum as to fitting ranges from tricky/difficult, to a real pain in the derrière.

I take it you have to drain the oil and water, a few I believe on the Forum have changed the pump so If you could share your experience I really would be grateful.

Quite a saga Phil! Did you have the engine out when you did this?

Does that back plate have to come off so you can get at the water pump chain?

Are Maserati owners naturally masochistic and enjoy inflicting great pain on themselves when they buy a Maserati?

When not emptying the contents of their wallets, or sobbing quietly in a corner, do they enjoy some light relief with a bit of self flagellation?

I could have had a Tesla in my driveway, and skipped about with the joy of worry free motoring!

But then again those lines, that sound, ahh. Hmm where did I Put my whip?

Engine stayed in place but I removed the exhaust manifolds and engine mounts to lift her up with my engine crane to give clearance underneath.
The pump pulls out backwards so you don't need to interfere with the chains and sprockets.
It all depends on how far you want to get into it and parts availability.
I've been a mechanic for 45 years and it's all nuts and bolts to be fair.
I was 52 when I did this one.
Now approaching 61 I have two lifts in my workshop and wouldn't do one on the floor again.
But it's all doable.

Welcome to the club of Maserati owners. Some like drama but I just enjoy the car. I love my Gransport Spyder and it is rare and its a pleasure to drive. It’s Ferrari heritage is there and you can feel it. Everyone craps on Maseratis but this vintage of cars, build under the leadership of Luca Di Montezemolo are quite special and they are fun. Fast car. I have had some minor issues but nothing that I would not have had in a BMW of the same vintage.
Enjoy the car and drive it with the top down every chance you get. That is the best stereo you can ever get.

Thanks Phil,

I will not be doing it I have a one man band mechanic that has looked after my cars for many years.

Its just that he has not done a 4200 Maserati before so I am trying to find out as much as I can.

Brian the mechanic has a large workshop with a couple of lifts so that should make it a tad easier than a ground job.

So to start oil and water has to be drained?

You are absolutely right Pgp These cars are rare.

At a car show I attended with my car Club (The show was one of the largest In Scotland at Glamis) Out of over 1800 cars I was the only Maserati there.

Although 20 years old it is still a head turner.
