Turned key nothing happened - long single beep from dash area - no error lights?

Hi,

This morning the car was covering in a thin sheet of ice. I open up the car, turn the key, wait for all the systems to do their thing and the lights to go out. I then turn the key and nothing at all happens. I remove the key and go through the process again. Again nothing. I do it all again and again nothing. Then there is a long single beep from the dash. Cr a p, I think. I open and close the drivers door. I leave it 30seconds and try again, again nothing and again the long single beep from the dash area.

I open and close the driver's door a few times but was not sure if i could hear the F1 Pump priming whine due to the noise of the traffic.

I went back in the house and left it for a few minutes and went back to the car.

I opened the driver's door, definitely heard the pump prime, turned the key, waited for the light to go out, then turned the key and it started and sounded fine. But there was the long single beep.

The car drove absolutely fine and acted normally. The battery has recently been replaced. The car has recently been serviced, which included gearbox fluid and a new lambda.

Any idea what caused this? Was it the cold weather causing something not to function properly.

There were no warning lights. The gear changes were normal, as they have been. So I'm not sure what it was.

Thanks

Ross, I had similar recently and have established the return spring is failling or has failed on the reverse leaver; I think Frank has it though - It's an Italian thing....

Thanks Newton. Not sure what the reverse lever has to do with it, as I had not touched it to park. Also I'd left it in 1st. But as with these Italian beauties no doubt somehow Reverse has got something to do with going forward.

On a seperate note, haven't some people reported the car getting stuck in gear when parked?

You may have hit on the issue, was the car in N or in gear?...when its cold the box is much more sluggish to move its self into N and then start.

Yes, it was in 1st!

I don''t think there is a way to change gear when the car is stationary though and not started, is there?

Could well be a brake pedal switch issue (possibly sticking) spray some silicone in the approximate area of the switch and give it a good few pumps , could be a faulty connection/ earth aswell (clean and grease terminals) , this time of year(extreme cold ) usually sorts out the gremlins and brings them to the fore ,

The dash will beep when it is 2 degrees or less outside ....thats a normal warning to let you know it may well be icy , but then you knew that lol

hope this helps

As long as the ignition is on you should still be able to select gears 1, n, r

Alert...I'm going to ask a silly question...

Where is the switch? Behind the pedal or in the floor where the pedal travels to. I'm guessing the floor. But thought I'd check.

It sounds like the brake pedal thing, as pulling both paddles towards me did nothing.

Thanks Loz, Newton, Safrane and Frank

Its situated 3/4 of the way up the brake pedal Ross , if you can contorse yourself and look up you will see it , faiiling that and you want to save your neck/back use a big mirror

This is what it looks like Rossyl. Bit of a pain to get at, but once in there only a couple of minutes to change...
