Tick, tick tick...

Mark, If you have used JCT600 in Leeds, I would seriously consider using Autoshield-Maserati in Manchester, near Trafford Park, for the next work you have done. They would not release the car if it had any issues, they keep at it until everything is perfect. Highly recommended.
There is also an "Indie" in Sheffield, but I have not used them.
Cheers

Gents, this appears to happen after the car has warmed up after a spirited drive. It does not appear to be related to the transmission (clutch, gearbox, etc) as it still happens while in neutral and engine is turning...it speeds up as i increase revs, which leads me to agree with my tech regarding the tappets...

I agree P, 5k miles shouldn't do that much damage to oil, although we do have "unique" weather here with the heat and dust...

My car has also developed a slight leak around the engine crank seal...my tech says this is quite common on 4200s...

Otherwise, I just set the clutch PIS to 4.3 (mine was at 5.5) and it is perfect! We also tried the recommended 4.8 and 5.1 settings, but the 4.3, as recommended by the ML forum was just right...very smooth on take off and other than the shunt in 2nd to 3rd shift on full throttle, it is very very smooth...try it!

Hi JP, Hope all is well with you?

It's tappets. Not uncommon. I had it with my 4200, and after a spirited drive in the GS, then there as well. As Matt mentions, I suspect your oil pressure will be down between 1.25 bar and 2.25 bar (at best) when it's most noticeable, which is basically when the oil is stinking hot and p1ssy as h€ll. There is a notional argument that if the noise gets more noticeable, and more often, then it's time to change your oil, but I'm not aware of anything to actually back the argument up.

Now at this point I will incur EVERYONES wrath and suggest you COULD consider moving away from 5W40 to a race spec oil such as 5W60, or even 10W60, as you'll hold a bit more viscosity and therefore pressure when the oil is very hot.

Unless my oil pressure sender is wrong, it never goes below the midpoint when idling. I've had the false warnings on it before, but believe it has been repaired or fixed since, as it sits halfway in idle and full when accelerating. I think I will have the oil changed soon when the car goes in to get the crank seal replaced.

Thanks gents!

That gauge sounds about right to me, it should not fall below half even when the oil is red hot and it should go to maximum when away from idle, so you are not far away.

My GS had its sender replaced and mimics yours JP. When stinking hot it would fall to just above 2 bar though.

Hi JP

Just wondered how this ended up for you? Did you manage to rid the ticking sound?

You will have a good idea what the oil pressure is if it gets noisy then seizes!

Following my service on the 4200, I noticed when hot that the guage reads around 1 to 1.5 on hot idle, about 3 to 3.5 on town cruise speed, 5 bar on full throttle, or when running at some speed. I'm hoping this is about right..?? I am also not sure what Autoshield put in it, I have asked but no reply as yet.

Any ticking though Robert?

Sounds a little low at warm idle, thought it should be 2.5, but I could be wrong.

Ross,
No I do not hear any ticking when running, or idling, engine sounds sweet. I thought the tickover pressure was a bit low for new oil, I am going to check with Autoshield shortly. The 3200 is at 2.5 on tickover, but because the 4200 is a dry sump, I'm not sure if the current pressure is correct, or not. I will post what I find out later.
Cheers

Correct warm idle on the 4200 and GS is top dead centre on the gauge, so 2.5 bar. 5 bar under throttle whether hot or cold and 5 bar at cold idle reducing as the engine warms up.. Note warn idle, not hot idle. If the oil has got too hot for the fans to cool in a given period, then 1.5 to 2.5 is okay, but you should hear the fans working their arses off to get it back to 2.5 bar.

I am prety sure Autoshield use Selinia Racing oil as per Maseratis spec.

Hey Ross,

Fresh 10W-60 oil helped at first but now I get the noisy tappets / lifters every so often. Oil was changed 4k miles ago (now at 44k miles), and I would say the ticking poked its ugly head back 2-3k miles later...so something's up!

Has anyone on here done an engine flush before on a 4200 / GS?

Miles,
Yes the low pressure reading is when the engine is hot and the fans are blasting away. I can't see Autoshield using anything other than the correct oil, so I am guesing that all is as it should be, just different to the 3200.

JP, are you sure the Variators are in good condition, one each side at the front, or maybe even the top central oil reservoir is not pushing oil to the variators, could be just one side even..?? I would be very, very careful flushing the engine.
Cheers

Mines on 105,000 miles and mine is flushed with Forte engine flush when I change mine and I use Shell Helix 5w40. Phil.

I have to say I'm with Robert as far as flushing is concerned. From bitter personal experience I believe it can do more harm than good. The difference may well be Phil that you've done it regularly, but flushing an engine with reasonably high mileage, multiple previous owners and no record of what oils have been used previously and you could be releasing all sorts of crud. Fine if you can get it all out, but not if you don't.
