Hi all! Great forum here. I currently drive a 2014 BMW DCT M4. I am contemplating swapping to a Maserati (link below). I do 5k-8k miles per annum. Could you guys take a look at the link and see what you think of the car? Are there any things I need to make sure the car has for future resale (Bose Speakers etc). Also the listing says something about some exhaust work being done (stainless x pipe), is this a red flag? Thanks in advance!

Welcome.
I know nothing about the price of 4.2s but on the face of it, that looks a very tidy early 4.2 with low mileage and good service history (although you'd have to confirm that) The interior doesn't seem to have the very common bits 'peeling', it has new brakes and tyres, which is a big plus. The piano black interior trim is nice and the front parking sensors are an attractive add on, as long as they're working.
Its been de-chromed and had lots of external parts either painted or wrapped in black (not standard) which I think looks good on that particular car, but others might not.
The x-pipe is an aftermarket exhaust mod which is very popular and makes the car a bit louder and will give more pops and crackles and is easily reversible, so nothing to worry about.

If you don't know these cars, get an independent pre-purchase inspection done by someone who does before purchase, or it might become expensive. In that area, I've used and would recommend Dale @PrestigeAutoworks or @SportsItalia.
Things to get checked that haven't been mentioned in the ad include;
Subframe corrosion
Variators
Suspension bushes
Cam Cover gaskets
AC compressor

Good luck in your search, and enjoy!

Also, have you driven one yet? I have the feeling that after a DCT M4, a 4.2 Auto might feel a bit lazy. A 4.7S Mc-Shift would probably feel much more acceptable.

Welcome along.
Your questions have been pretty much answered.
I would like to know who the last specialist owner was just for peace of mind.
Top money but could be a 5 star car.
Good Luck.

^^^^ I agreed with Wattie. At the advertised price, you shouldn’t be too far away from a decent 4.7 model.

Welcome. I've driven a M4 like yours and it is light years faster than my 4.7 GranTurismo so it doesn't matter which engined GranTurismo you buy. If you want one - and please do - its more of a 6 series coupe but with back seats that work.

There are plenty of faster cars available, even my electric work car is faster but it hasn't got the soul of a maserati,
It's like having a puppy, it will wee on the floor, bite your fingers and cost a fortune in maintenance but the way it welcomes you when you fire it up is so rewarding.

That looks like a stunning example and even the more modest 4.2 has a unique charm.
Good luck

There's not a lot of love for the 4.2 on here but I've had one for 9 years and it suits me just fine. I guess it depends what you want from your car. This is old tech now and lightyears from your m4 but it ferries my family around in effortless comfort and style. I actually prefer the look of the 4.2 with its pinched in waist and pretty nose, no sideskirts or aggressive chin!

Your other thread about service costs made me dig out the file of receipts, I've never added them up before can't think why. I'll put this up here if it doesn't help you it might help someone else.

It's an early 4.2 that I paid £45k for in 2012 and have apparently spent almost exactly half as much again on maintenance. So my ownership experience works out to roughly £2.5k a year. I would guess my time has been fairly average - 4 services (£1-2k), the usual expenses front disks once and rear disks twice (epb seizing issue), suspension springs all round and front bushes. Some of the typical issues - water in the boot from rear window seal, abs sensor failure, park sensor failure, rocker cover seals twice. I've also had to replace the altenator, refurb the steering rack and brake calipers. A variator solenoid and the oil pressure check valve have both had to be replaced too.

I've had it waxoyled which is essential on the older cars and probably the newer ones too.

Chuck in a couple of batteries and numerous tyres and that's what it adds up to.

It's far from perfect I could spend a few thousand more on paintwork and the interior trim is peeling but the bottom line is if you find one with the usual brakes, bushes corrosion recently done then there shouldn't be too many surprises. It's been a pretty reliable car. Although i have found everything works in multiples of £1k.. that's broken that'll be £1k, oh you want one of those that'll be £1k. I was in the dealer network for the first few years but the indies are invaluable, as is this forum - a great source of wisdom and other things.

The one omission from the list is I haven't had the variators done. It has done 55k miles and is driven regularly all year round and apart from the odd noise on a very cold morning they aren't a problem yet....

Buy one and enjoy it!

Thank you to everyone for their responses. Totally looking at these cars for the soul. I’m not one for driving fast, just love the symphony of the engine. One drove past me last week and I haven’t been off autotrader since!!
Well that you buggered then. You've gotta have one now.

Same happened to me some years ago, thought it was the beautiful sound EVER!

This without a doubt. You will not regret going 4.7.
+1
4.2 will also lose more value when it comes to selling. So 4.7 will probably cost you less in the long run, plus all the benefits of a 4.7 already outlined above

Tidy car, looks a bit pricey for a 4.2.
I agree w comments above, go for a 4.7, which won’t be much more money and enjoy the better sound and better engine.
This one is an early model which was subject to variators issues (3k fix)...
If you’re really after a 4.2 - then buy a 2009+ car
X pipe is a must on the 4.2 as that model is way too quiet otherwise.

Just buy what you want. The performance difference between the two engines is not a lot on the road so buy on colour scheme, condition and miles as all are soft compared to the M4. Just reveal in the fact that they have a long wheelbase and no turbo that tries to send you sideways when it aggressively kicks in. You can only lose £24k....
