I took my son in law to pick up his new Tesla model Y yesterday and what a depressing experience it was, the pick up was from the Tesla self service point located on the ground floor of a dark, grey, concrete carpark at the **** end of the Bluewater shopping center. There was one guy there who did not even have a cabin to sit in and was freezing, his job was to hand over the key and show people how to access the "Tesla tutorials" on the screen, that's it, there was no handover as such and the guy said that no PDI had been done, any faults need to be raised on line and a tech will visit, it was, as I say, pretty depressing and a stark contrast to when I picked up my Ala 156 GTA a few years back which was roped off in the center of the showroom under a red dustsheet with an Alfa logo on it and a bouquet of flowers on the passenger seat for my wife.
When I picked him up to take him to the pickup point I used my 3200 and said to him in jest "I'm using it just to remind you what a real car is like to drive". I have since been in the Tesla and whilst the tech is amazing I just cant get enthusiastic about sitting in faux leather seats looking out over plastic and fake wood with nothing in front of me. Don't get me wrong it's a fantastic achievement in terms of tech and if you want a relaxing drive with no drama then I'm sure its one of the best although I am sure there are better. On a more positive note I have just been out for an early drive in my 3200 this morning just to remind myself why I still keep it; with the Tesla I could have pre heated the cabin, pre heated the battery for higher cold start performance and checked the car over from the comfort of my armchair all via wireless data (and paid half as much for the fuel) but there would be no noise, no fumes, no instrument binnacle and most importantly no FUN.
