Apparently the Duke of Wellington was truly shocked by all the bloodshed involved in fighting Napoleon.

As he stood surveying the massed armies facing each other, as the Battle of Waterloo was about to start, he said to his staff, “If only there was another way to resolve these disputes.”

“How could we do that, your Grace?” shouted his second-in-command, Henry Paget, Earl of Uxbridge, over the tumult of the soldiers deploying behind the crest of the ridge following the Ohain road.

Wellington shouted back, “Well, we could meet Napoleon in a nice pub, and discuss how to resolve out differences over a pint of beer, bit to eat, open fire…”

“Ooops”
