If I can remember I press the pedal before I start, otherwise first thing I do once started is take it out of Auto. Never sit around waiting for it to warm up, there is no need, just don't give it the full beans until temps are up.
As for hill starts, these are really easy, sit with the car in neutral and foot on the brake. When you need to go put into first take foot off brake and the car will be held by the brakes until you press the throttle to move off, at which point they release. Works a treat with no rolling backwards.
