Startup - what do you do

If I can remember I press the pedal before I start, otherwise first thing I do once started is take it out of Auto. Never sit around waiting for it to warm up, there is no need, just don't give it the full beans until temps are up.

As for hill starts, these are really easy, sit with the car in neutral and foot on the brake. When you need to go put into first take foot off brake and the car will be held by the brakes until you press the throttle to move off, at which point they release. Works a treat with no rolling backwards.

If I remember correctly from my old 4200 Spyder, the handbook advised AGAINST warming the car up before driving. It said to drive off once started. I'd imagine 8,000 rpm in the first 3 or 4 minutes may not be a great idea, but warming up is more likely to damage the cats as they're not getting the through flow of exhaust gases to clean everything up ?

Very happy to be advised I'm talking shoite, but that's just from memory and don't have a handbook handy.

Interesting thing with the GTS is that it won't let you change up below certain revs until it's warmed up. Something like 2.5k iirc.

If you're talking shoite, it's very correct shoite. That's what the 4200 handbook recommends. Still, it felt right to let her wake up for the first couple of minutes underway...

Jeanette back in her motorbike days used to think the red bit on the Rev counter was the warm up zone. I kid you not; we lived 100 yards from the Romford road in Forest Gate and as soon as she hit the main RR it was redlie all the way, two up mostly!

My other half jumps in his car and thrashes it down the road in a plume of fuel-rich smoke from the warm up function. To him, the accelerator pedal is an on/ off switch.

Morning

So being the newbie asking stupid questions, since buying the new baby Ive been starting her up and sitting there for 5-10 minutes letting her warm up before pulling away and giggling like a lunatic.

Is it better to let her warm up before pulling away, does this increase clutch life etc.

Ive seen some tricks re pushing the accelerator down a few times before start up to reduce that lovely clunking shift change when cold, but wanted to see what other members did.

(OH and any tricks for holding her on a hill thats an interesting challenge as my porsche tiptronic just sat on the bite and sort of waddled there and if not then it was maybe that I had a handbrake lever that I could pull gave me the reassurance of I won't roll backwards, or Im just a cr%% driver)

I do the pedal push thing before starting and then let the car idle until up to temperature. That seems to reduce the jerky gear changes, but they still happen occasionally. If i have to drive the car before it is up to temperature I drive with the ICE button depressed until up to temperature. That seems to do the trick.

I was reading in another forum that actually you don't need to pump the accelerator all you need to do is leave it with all dash lights on for 3 seconds.

That might explain why I've never found a need to do the accelerator thing. With all modern cars being run by computer I always get in, turn on the ignition, put the seat belt on then start it. That gives all the electronics time to boot up.

Me too - experience from my 3200 which throws all the toys out if you try a quick start. Wait for all (or most) warning lights to extinguish.
Even better in the QP, as it whirrs for fractional longer than I expect then wakes with a real bark and flare of revs :alan4:

Start ignition, pump the pedal a few times, wait for the lights to go off, fire her up. Press auto to come out of it, switch on heated seats, turn on radio, pull pedal and drive off...hit sport button once warmed her up and then turn off radio :)

3200 - I usually pause slightly between getting the dash lights up and turning the key further to start the engine, but I don't know why... just a little empathy I guess... for the reason given about booting up. I asked Mike Roberts about this (Maserati Shed) and he said what for? just get in the turn the key, so not official reason for delay in starting as far as I know.

I have always been told to let it cycle through the self test/check beep and wait for all lights to go out before starting and this works for me. On the odd occasion I have not done it the immobiliser light or airbag light has stayed on so it has become de rigueur.

I also faff about like you Ian when I start my old 3200GT...I used to stall it a few times in the early days, turn it back on qiuck and drive off without any problems
Maybe your man Mike is right, stop faffing and just start it like any other modern car..
