Hello everyone, probably a really dumb question but I'm going to ask anyway! It seems to me that all of this stuff with laptops and cables is a bit of a nightmare if your car suddenly goes into limp mode in the middle of the night miles from anywhere as my 3200 periodically has done in the past - Luckily it was a 2001 car with the OBD II plug and my **** was saved literally dozens of times by a £15 code reader from e-bay which cleared the codes 9 times out of ten and away we went . Sadly that car has been written off in an accident (don't get me started!) and I am looking seriously at replacing with a 2000 car which I discovered today has the 3 pin connector. Am I right in thinking that you couldn't just change the end of the cable and wire in an OBD II end instead of the 3 pin bleeder and then use the little portable code reader in the manner I've described above? Sounds too easy and I'm sure some of you more tech-savvy folk would have already done that and this thread wouldn't be 15 pages long so I suspect this isn't possible! If that is the case then is it possible to change the ECU to a 2001 or later version and then do the plug change? Knowing how temperamental they can be I feel pretty alarmed at the prospect of driving one without an easy solution to ECL and limp mode issues. Sorry if these are glaringly stupid questions but not too hot on the technical side and just thought I'd ask!
Best wishes,
Kim
