QP smoke on start up - help!

New car, scared!

This morning I started up the QP (2004 53k on the clock fsh) and got a reasonable cloud of smoke out the back - much to my panic!

It was only on startup and went almost immediately... It hadn't happened the previous 6-7 times I've driven it since picking it up on thurs and it hasn't done it since (tried to emulate twice since). I had completed a 2 hour drive the night before (trying to set the scene in case it makes a difference).

Is this normal? I'm guessing not, my GTR used to kick out a lot of smoke mainly when you floored it but that was perfctly normal as it was a twin turbo.

Advise please? Otherwise she's getting booked into my nearest specialist ASAP!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Sounds a bit strange...but if no dash lights and no loss of performance and its not happened again....why worry?

Definitively smoke, it smelt like oil and I recognise the difference... Stem ensued as normal after the smoke had cleared...

I guess just monitor and hope it doesn't happen again. No warning lights but you never know what a previous owner has covered up! It was PPI'd by a specialist so hopefully it's nothing to worry about...

No-one else had this before then?

Nick,

With a single episode there is probably nothing to worry about. If the smoke issue is perpetual or there are other symptoms such as loss / consumption of oil / unusual engine noise or adverse performance then this would be different. By all means have the car checked but I doubt that anything sinister will be found. I think Parisien has given you good advice.

What colour is your oil when you dip it? Mine is yellow/clear not black. Remember your car (2004) has a dry sump so you need to check the level with the engine running and warm.

Yep, I would concur with the others here Nick. Keep an eye on your oil level (check when engine is at operating temperature - yours is dry sump) and monitor to see if smoke episode repeats itself but unless you encounter any other adverse effects (loss of power or erratic running) I would say don't panic.

My GS used to do the same thing. I think it stemed from turning the battery off and not using regularly.

I think it was overfuelling by the ECU being in learn mode from the battery being off.

It did stop doing it after a while.

If you have clean, correct level oil and good pressure I would not worry about it.

I have checked this out with Emblem in Poole previously and was informed this is a idiosyncratic issue with the engine design...you will get it every few hundred starts.

Phew thanks for all the advice guys... with a new car (new to me) it's always worrying when you see that... it's not done it since and I've driven it a few more times... it did seem like a one off! Keeps you on your toes this car doesn't it :) haha

I had exactley the same thing about a year ago, was tracked down to being slightly overfilled with oil, & some spirited acceleration when pulling away fast.
Oil mist from the crackcase breather was forced into the intake manifold & condensed in the chamber as the car cooled overnight. Next morning the oil was drawn into the engine, burnt & produced a "2 stroke" cloud ad it burnt off.
The cure was simply to drain the overfilled oil @
& clean the concertina inlet stub by the air filter. Whilst your at it, clean the throttle butterfly with carb cleaner, it helps it tick over smoothly & helps the clutch action to become more progressive.

Cheers

I have had this a couple of times myself, I think Matt is right about it being associated with a throttle reset; scared the h£ll out of me the first time too....

Mine does this every so often, nothing to worry about according to Marios and the guys at Autoshield.

Mine does it occasionally, sometimes after short runs. I recall past online advices that "they all do that sir". Nothing to worry about.
