What's wrong with the 4.2 Matt, a "SEDATE DRIVE", you should come with me for a quick spin and that should change your mind, but mine is only a 4200 though...hehehe...???

I meant the GranTurismo Auto 4.2, not the coupe. It's lighter and has F1 box.

Matt,
It's OK mate I was just playing.
Orcadian,
If your 993 performance was as stated, then any Maserati is quicker. The 4200 does around 4.7 sec's I think and so do most of the others, so you should be fine in virtually anything Maserati.

I know when I drove the 4.2 GT I thought it had an heavy feel to it and thought it was never a replacement for the GS.....It felt slower.....but then it should never be seen as a replacement for the GS and I suppose it all depends what car you are coming out of. Its a great car and one that will take you miles and miles in comfort and it still sounds great.

Agree completely. It's a shame they did not keep the GS in production for another two or three years as it would still have sold.

Orcadian,
I would go with actual production figures and not PH adverts, they can be misleading..??
On the 4200 / GS question, I am at a bit of a disadvantage on that because my 4200 is almost a GS and slightly better than the early 4200's.

Hi Orcadian,

I'm afraid I know nothing (4200 owner) of the surely wondrous GT but thought I'd chime to say that I'm also from Orkney! I'm west coast based these days but make it up home a few times a year. We can have the first Orkney Maserati Meet :)

Good luck with the hunt.

Weel beuy, Orcadians pop up everywhere!
I'm easy to find, Lynffield hotel -we've had a few car clubs by, Triumph, Aston Martin and Lagonda. A Maserati tour coming this far north is a great idea as I can never see me making it to anything south as I wrk all summer. County Show weekend with the vintage rally on the sunday? Even if should be just me and you

Evening Orcadian,
Coming from years in 996's (C2 & Turbo) I would definitely steer towards the 4.7, preferably with the MC Shift. Although biased, having owned one for a few months, they are such an event to drive and in performance terms not lacking at all. Having tried a few 4.2's these are in my opinion a little softer, quieter and more refined drive especially with the auto transmission. The MC Shift is epic! Takes a little getting used to and whilst not the best for tight parking spaces in normal driving it's a brilliant gearbox.
Be careful of the size though. Much, much bigger than 911 both length and especially width with very long doors. Whichever one you choose I'm sure you'd be delighted with it.
Cheers

Given that 993 prices are creeping up while GT prices are still softening, you may as well wait until the spring (especially so given that you have a targa to sell).

As said by others, the Maser is a much bigger and heavier car. While it may be faster on paper and some roads, on narrow country lanes the 911 would be more fun to drive fast. Also do check that it will in your garage - my QPV was too big for comfort so I swapped it for a 911.

If you are going to use the car for long trips and European tours (for example), the Maser is the one. But for short country lane blasts, or a medium term investment, I'd stick with the 993.

Well who would miss the show week! Although as every right thinking individual knows, the Dounby show is the main event. West is best after all beuy! Vintage rally sounds like a good plan, my dad is usually their poking about old Jags and fettling ancient Lister engines so I'll be there anyway.I think (they aren't on here) there is a chap in Shetland with one as well. But do we really want to be inviting Shelties down...

Anyway, I've put this in my calendar so hopefully I'll remember to do something about this closer to the time. In the meantime, give me a shout if there is anything I can do down here to aid your search.

The lynnfield, had a few good nights there in the past, although not been there for a while. I'll have to ask mum for some information...

Cheers,

Kenny

Many thanks guys.
'Blu' -I am definitely edging towards a 4.7,(for the times you have time for a bit of fun and for just knowing the power is there) but not been brave enough to mention it to my banks finance dept. I really should as I will easily find out what my timescale is likely to be. May be i'm just frightened I'll discover its years away!
Ewan-my only real reason for saleing the 993 is my better half is not happy in it at all. We have a 5 to 6 hour drive to Glasgow occasionally and its no fun in the P when you can only do 50! I like the idea of the Italian character in cars, the 993 is brill but a bit devoid of that (I haven't driven a maser, it has to be said) When I sale it has to be a trade-in (I suppose I can try ebay to beat the trade-in value), my bank won't finance a private deal, so timing isn't so important, but the bigger car is.

Kenny,
Sorry, I'm an isles boy, Westray is best!
The Lynnfield might be a bit different, the first thing i did was to close the Surgery Bar, now a hotel and restaurant with 250 malts. have a look at www.lynnfieldhotel.com
'r' no for Rendall is it?

Welcome to the forum Orcadian and good luck in your search. Won't add to the wisdom already posted other than to say that I've had a few messages back and forth with the guys at PK and they come across as a good indi'. Certainly not heard anything negative at all. Maybe get in contact with Phil and see if they have the kit to look after the GT's. Dicky's certainly your man for tracking a good example down and dependant on where it is, there is a network of reliable indi's to inspect it for you prior to purchase.

Regards, Miles.
