The racing was a common thing back then, I used to be around that next of the woods regularly and they all did it. How the coppers never set up a trap was beyond me, they'd have made a killing in fines. If I remember correctly the tunnel he lost it in has a curve and is after a roundabout, so perhaps road conditions and ability or lack of all combined.
