Great explanation Lewis thanks.

Don't know any science behind it but I had a 1980 Merc 123 230E that I restored and rebuilt the engine 'breathed' on it a bit with gas flow and other tweeks internally. Ran it on fully synthetic oil, platinum plugs K&N type filter on the old housing etc.

On supermarket super it had por performance but on Optimax (it was tuned for it for me) it would deliver all of these: 28mpg giving an extra 100mile range, 0-60 in under 9 (over the standard 15) off the clock top end (> 130mph) and easy starting. did 58k in it before I let it go brilliant car last of the properly buily Mercs... at 100k when I rebuilt it there were still honning marks in the bores!!!

Optimax is worth it financially with those figures but I cannot find a noticable difference over Tesco Super in the Maserati sorry guys...

Incidentally If you are passing through North Kent during the day and need a refuel you can drop into Brands Hatch and fill up with real 100 RON racing fuel!!!! We used to stick that in the 959 for a kraik!

There was a proper test done some time ago with an engine fixed up to a test rig and it proved beyong doubt that V-power or Optimax as it was then along with the Tesco Premium fuel gave the best results and the BP product further down. As mentioned V-Power/Optimax does have the advantage of cleaning agents in the fuel. Most RX7's that are set up on the dyno all use V-Power as part of the mapping process.

Interesting that Tesco scored higher than BP Ultimate! What were the tests, purely for power? Trouble with short tests is they obviously don't give an idea of long term benefits. Ultimate should keep your engine in good nick long term though. I usually put Texaco (Chevron) fuel in my cars due purely to convenience - there's one at the end of the street! But the upshot is, premium fuel is worth it in the right car for the right driving. Emblem told me to put 95 in during winter as you don't use the power anyway! (but you do benefit from the detergents)

This from Scarlan in Australia this morning:

"I saw an interesting thread on Sports Maserati the other day with someone complaining that he paid £1.42 for premium unleaded.

We think we have it bad at the moment and it is about the same only in Australian dollars, i.e. $1.42. This equates to about £0.90."

Makes ya sick, dunnit?

Don't forget though Phil; it is cheaper to buy a UK Maserati & ship it to Australia than it is to buy one, I.e. Car prices here are considerably higher.
Both you & I know a lot about that!
I did fill the car up this morning & premium was $1.60.
With the tragic events in Japan we have been warned petrol prices will be going upwards.
Will try to upload some photos of your car when I am on my computer rather than playing on the iPad.

Actualy the pice is coming down and will fall even more. Japan only cosumes oil, and with the problems they are having they will consume much less. Oli price today has fallen to less than $99 per barrel. A number of factorys have closed due the the power shortage and as such they will require fewer parts/raw materials...so the only good side to this dreadful event is oil coming down...but I would have gladly paid 10p more per ltr than seen what they are going through.

I am drilling for oil in my garden - but the longest drill bit I have is 1 metre long - off to B&Q for an extension rod.
Trouble is, if I strike lucky the kitchen needs to be transformed into a refinery, which is not good when its time for Sunday roast.

Might need to be a bit longer... we're about to start drilling a well that will be 21700ft deep!! Purely exploration, just on a hunch. The cost is projected to be $126,000,000. It's a serious business!

Sounds like the genie is out of the bottle Dem... It's the last thing Cyprus needs to get the attention of the septic tanks again... Unless what has been found is the supply pipe for that US airbase in 'Southern Turkey' that doesn't exist!

One well, pure wildcat exploration, the deepest we (as a company) have ever drilled. I have been involved with others like it but it's new for these chaps. To get this wrong would break the company... Big gamble...
