On the verge of going 4200 shopping

Hi All

Just discovered this forum and its made me even keener to get a Maserati. Since having a ride a week or so ago in 360 Modena, I have been determined to acquire some Italian exotica. The 360 is not (yet) for me, for loads of reasons, but after days of research I have decided that a 4200 is just the ticket to get me into the crazy world of owning and running Italian supercars. I had posters of Lambos, Ferraris and Masers on my wall when I was kid. The Bora was my favourite car in 1970's Top Trumps pack. But I'm a sensible guy, so the thought of getting a Maserati is pretty scary. I grew up on motorbikes but that all stopped when the kids were born and now they are about to go to Uni, so maybe it is time to wave good bye to Captain Sensible for a while.

I have a budget of £20k and have convinced myself that it is much better that my savings earn themselves a living rather than sit lazily in the bank. It is basically just moving money around and not actually spending it, isn't it? The games we play to talk ourselves into doing something daft but fun. I reckon a 2004/5 4200 with as low as mileage as possible is the one to go for me - preferably one that has had a new clutch... I live in Bristol which seems to be a barren desert of affordable Masers so it looks like I will be spending Sunday checking out a few examples in the South East. I think if I buy one I will have take to Cardiff, Swindon or Exeter for servicing and fixing which is a bit of pain. Also I will have cross a deep of camber between my driveway and the road that will probably need some kind of bridge. I don't have a garage. So there are few issues, but what the ****.

I'll let you know how my testing goes. Interestingly my wife and 18 year daughter seem keen to spend in Maser dealers and on the motorways in between. My wife has a horse that seems to spend a lot time in the garage/vet and generally off the road, while consuming livery costs and large volumes of special food, clothed in special rugs, with special shoes and special saddles, so maybe she understands something of illogical ownership.

Incidentally, if you are the owner of the GT MC Stradale up the road from me, give us a shout!

Good man. *Personally* I wouldn't get too het up about low miles. My car is looking at 80k, there are some on here with over 100k and no major issues. Conversely there are some garage queens which are problems.
Get a PPI for peace of mind (though it doesn't always seem to get everything) and enjoy!

welcome to the forum!
having started out looking for a 4200 and then having my head turned by twin turbos:excellent: I can say with a budget of 20k you should get a good 4200. the guys on here will keep you right so enjoy testing and looking then get an indy inspection to seal the deal when you find the "one":thumb1:

Welcome...as the owner of three coupes over the last six years I cab truly say its the best car buying decision I have ever made.

As mentioned earlier miles is not an issue and too low can actually cause you more problems.

There are a few of us around Bristol and Bath. Phil who has a 110k milss 4200 and a Ferrari, Snowflakes with his 4200. Paul with a late 3200 and me up in Emersons with my GS....Why not join us for one of the Sunday Bristol Breakfast meets in Queens Sqaure.

PS Have a chat with Richard Grace he has sourced 70% of my Maseratis.

Buying a high mileage car is easy but selling one may not be, so unless you have a limited budget and/or want a keeper I would err on the side of caution. £20k is a comfortable budget though, and it should get you a very good car with decent mileage.

Hi Petbri, welcome to the fold.
Enjoy the hunt and take a test drive in a 3200 too if possible, and don't dismiss a higher mileage GS if you can find one within budget. There was one week before last if I recall for £18.5K (if I had the cash I would have gone for it!)
Cheers
Neil.

Follow your heart and buy the best car for your money!
I have just come out of a Gen 2 911 C4S Targa and tomorrow take delivery of a quattroporte GTS. Whilst I have no doubt the 911 is the better car it simply had no soul!
Tomorrow is going to be an epic day......

Hi Petbri

I waited ages for the right car to come along and was definitely worth the wait - I got mine this time last year.

I spent just a little more than your figure and got a high spec'd 4200 with 23k miles, FSH and in immaculate condition. I had a independent inspection done by a specialist (also done on another car that I subsequently walked away from).

It's such a great car to drive - has great presence, it's an event every time I take it out - and I'd say it's almost unique as I just never see any on the road. :approve:

Welcome and don't worry as I'm not selling my high miler as we have plenty more adventures planned for her to gain even more miles.
Phil.

Hi Safrane - I'd love to meet up at Queens Square sometime. How often do you meet?
How does it work with Richard sourcing cars? He does not have a suitable car in his stock at the moment.

And thanks to all for the encouragement!

Keep an eye on here as the events are listed on here and also on the right had side of the forums home page.

Give Richard a call (tell him I sent you) let him know your budget and preference...dependent on how stringent you are will dictate the time you may have to wait.

Mine will have over 60k by the end of the year and, tbh, I'm surprised it hasn't gone bang by now with the abuse it gets. If/when it does let go, I'll stick another donk in it and thrash the cr4p out of that one as well. Fantastic machines.
