More likely, not many people had a phone.Love the 5 digit phone number in the first advert. Shows how lower the population used to be
One year later...why did you buy that thing, it's always in the garage being fixed.
Our nursery in my grandfather’s time was Lytham 48 which became 735448.More likely, not many people had a phone.
Urmston 4344
I can still remember my favourite Aunties number, my cousin now lives in the house and I asked him for his number, and it's still the same after 50 years of family ownership...Urmston nnnn....Our nursery in my grandfather’s time was Lytham 48 which became 735448.

So nothing to do with the massive population explosion from 1981 (56,357,500) to 2021(66,983,500) (census years)?1977 Bawdeswell 324
Explosion in phone numbers in short. When I was a kid:
House phone between 4 of us.
Mum's Switchboard. Say 50 users : 0.02
Dad's base line. Say 200 users: 0.005
So that's 1.025 numbers between 4 or 0.256 numbers 'each'
In our current house there are two of us
Landline
Mrs C mobile
My mobile
My other mobile
Car number
Mrs C's direct dial
My direct dial
That's 3.5 numbers each, on average, before we add the 'main' office lines. (call it 0.02 each)
So 3.52 numbers each. 13 fold increase

Maybe someone should stop watching GB News...![]()
I'm just shocked you still have a landline. Is that what your fax machine is plugged into?Well I *was* going to leave it to my colleague, but...
That would make a ballpark 0.3 numbers each, assuming in line with the population.
