Oil pressure too high?

Took the GS out for a good long drive yesterday (first dry day for ages!) and noticed that the oil pressure gauge stayed at 5 bar for the duration.

The manual says it should be 2.5 bar. Should I be concerned with it being too high? If so, what could be the cause?

Did it not drop at all when idling?

It should go up to 5 when you're moving along, but when hot drop it'll drop to something like 2-2.5

I didn't notice it drop at all. Even when back on the driveway it was reading 5. Faulty gauge maybe?

It will be the sender unit easy to change if you remove the inlet manifold as its at the back in the V.

You can use a bent spanner to access the sender without the need to take the plenum off.

Had he same issue, was ready to change the sender. Oil changed, gauge back to normal.

(These cars love fresh oil- engine & transmission)

-How old is yr oil & is the the correct grade?

Thanks for all the replies...

The car is due a service and will be going to Dick Lovett at the end of the month, so let's see if the oil change cures it!

In case the oil change doesn't cure it, Do you know of there are any threads on the forum with detailed instructions/pics of this procedure?

To clarify; when cold it will probably read 5 bar, even at tickover but it should always read 5 bar from 2-2500rpm upwards when hot. At normal temps the oil pressure should be 2.5 bar at tickover but in the manual it says the oil light might flicker at tickover (IIRC 1-1.5 bar) after a long hard run but as the temp comes down, the pressure should go up towards 2.5 bar.

If the reading is permanently 5 bar whatever the temp, then it's most likely to be the sender. If its permanently low, it's likely to be either the sender, the pressure relief valve sticking open or a kn4ckered engine.

My car is a 3200 so its different, but i often get 5 bar all the time in the winter when the oil and engine is running a little cooler. Colder oil is more viscous so pressure will be higher. While i accept the engine and oil should get to the same temperature in any weather (eventually) i do think the colder air running over everything lowers temperatures a little. Just a thought!

Took the GS out today and bizarrely the oil pressure seems to have righted itself! Gauge reads 4.5 to 5 bar under acceleration and dips to just over 2.5 bar when slowing down. Seems to be about right?

I have seen this before, its an oil pressure sender on its way out.

Keep an eye on it but I wouldn't stress about it.
