Second that Great Result.
That's a couple of us that have that Tee shirt now.
I started mine up with just the manifolds on sounded Great and emptied the Pub opposite my house.
They called me Enzo in there having the 4200 and the 360 back then.

Thanks all, I wouldn’t have taken it on without the knowledge and helpfulness of this forum to fall back on

Great feeling watching that oil pressure needle climb!

Think the noise could wake the dead!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge/experience, made an otherwise daunting job seem doable :)

Exhaust separated from the manifold at the y piece while testing the Mini last week. Wouldn’t rev over 7k when that happened, quite surprised how much of a performance drop it caused.

Wow what's your Mini rev too ?
My old Datsun Sunny 1300 push rod overhead valve used to rev to 9,000 :)

Rev limiter is set at 8250 I think. Don’t really go that far unless there’s a particular reason. It’d rev more but is starting to go off the boil.

Had a bit of a set back today.

I’ve had the car running a few times over the last couple of weeks, up to temperature checking fans cut in etc. while I’ve been putting the suspension and brakes back together.
It has sounded sweet, with no issues.

Today I lowered the front axle stand setting and put the back up on axle stands to get the car level ready to top up the gearbox oil.
Started the car and after four or five minutes it started making a ticking / rattling noise, think from the top end on the lh side (but not totally sure yet). Oil pressure still very good though.

It has been run for around an hour since the oil pump change, idling and reving and sounding spot on. The only thing that’s changed is the front end was up high on axle stands and now it’s on the level, weird!

Thinking it may be a sticky lifter or variator?

You sure it’s not the clutch disengaging they do that after 3-4 mins and makes quite a nasty sound. All perfectly mormal

Thanks, I think it sounded more ‘top endy’ and it’s a manual. But maybe it could still be the release bearing or something? I’ll try it tonight.

It’s disappointing because it has run sweetly on several occasions before I lowered it down

Look, I havent been around these cars for that long but it does seem to be an issue that comes up. I dont think it is that serious from what I can glean from owners...
It could be many things in essence...Injectors, solenoid valve, sticking lifter, cracked manifold ( valve noise )... I supose it might be a variator- how noisy are yours? You say it runs sweet so Im assuming they are quiet and well behaved...!
Several complainants, myself included, have recorded surprising results from an oil change. Too much oil not only covers your MAF in copious amounts of hot, oily vapour ( bad !) but for me, resulted in an hydraulic tick....I changed a failed sender and oil/filter at one time and it read(s) low..I topped up after getting oil lights..The more you put, the harder it is to read a frothing oil tank and dipstick...Paranoia about low pressure lead me up the wrong alley.. After I removed 1.25 L too much oil..all was good!

Try an engine oil flush if corrosion debris is in the oilways/engine.
There is a product ( additive) designed to loosen stubborn valve gear..No experience of it myself...

You might record it, and describe the symptoms with further investigation as to the parameters and so on....

It’s alive!

Engine was enough back together today to turn it over on the starter with the fuel off, oil pressure came up nicely. Fuel back on on and it fired into life (loudly! With just the manifolds on). Oil pressure spot on and no leaks, I’m having a beer to celebrate.
Engine bay not looking bad with the repainted cam covers and leaving the inlet bare.
Few clips to put back on, exhausts, anti roll bar and then put the suspension back together from the subframe exchange and it’ll be back on the road.

Excellent job! There’s nothing more satisfying than turning the key and hear it fire up after a big job like that. :clapps:
