Big welcome to the forum nrick.....gs is the way to go....although as mentioned by frank a late 2005 4200 is a gs with a 4200 interior.

With the greatest of respect Andy, no it isn't. Wheels are different, and therefore the tyres, skirts are different, grill is different, some of the suspension components are different, as is the exhaust (and associated electronics) and the steering rack. The ride height is different, and therefore so is the geometry, there is a boot lid spoiler and BHP is up by ten due to different mapping and improved engineering tolerances, working in conjunction with the different exhaust. Gear change is quicker, and therefore so is the change when the sport button is pressed. And that's before we move onto interior differences.

Just 'cos some punter trying to sell a face lift 4200 implies it's effectively a GS without the price tag, doesn't make it so.

...a facelifted 4200 car........is still worth considering Miles.....sure it aint a GS........but....it looks a lot better than the standard 4200...horses for courses....and you spends your money and takes your chances....:)

Does it P? Yes there are differences, some of which were then carried through into the GS, but it's still a (n undoubtedly improved) 4200 and not a GS. Sorta like saying to a pretty girl... "Ye know, if you got breast enlargements, you could look like Angelina Jolie." She was a pretty girl in the first place!!!

In the words of Crosby, Stills and Nash....... "Love the one you're with"

....wasn't disputing........the superiority in nearly every area....but the facelifted version ....is a better looking 4200 than a non-lifted one...given a choice, I know which I will take next time around!

P, I have to agree with Miles. IMO, the original 4200 looks a lot more elegant than the face-lift. It is 'cleaner' with simple lines, whereas the later car looks more 'butch' and a bit chunkier. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and given the choice I would have the original. The only reason I would get a GS is because of the mechanical improvements, not the styling.

Yep you're right Miles, wheels, skirts, boot lip spoiler, exhaust....I think the face lift had the GS suspension upgrades, and gear box upgrades as per Franks other thread...which I must say I didn't know that.

Aim with Frank prefer the late 4200, think it's thee bigger grille, as Miles says, if we were all the same......

It's clear from the comments that you pays your money and takes your choice.
4200 or GS seem the way to go for you.
It's about the statement you want to make and the way you want to drive - you can potter in a 4200 but not so in a GS.
(well I can't even do that until I get my licence back).

However and it's a big however; whatever you do, take your time and choose carefully.
I rather would go for low-mileage more than the year as long as it's '04 model year or later. Get FSH and AN INDEPENDENT CHECK - vital wherever it comes from and will be ££ well-spent!
Best wishes and an early welcome to a club of happy people.

Thanks for the help, I am decided on a GS or a late 4200. I want the CC and would appreciate the extra sportiness of the GS.

Any comments on the red GS up for sale at Marshalls? I want to keep the car, so the colour doesn't really worry me, and I quite like the red.

Unknown service history, not a maser dealer, red, tech cloth, needs an inspection (who is best?) bad advert, are keys an issue on GS's.

Thanks

Hi Nrick,

On this forum, we all love a thick sheaf of invoices, so we can see whats been done....at this point personally I'd walk away.........however if after a must do indie inspection.....about £200-300 - best money you will spend ( can reduce price by £2/3 K...and affray other costs), and some more research, ie it must have been looked after somewheres, contact 1/2/3 previous owners...see what they tell you and intense negotiation to take into account this huge deficit, then make an offer.

Red is quite nice in this car, your preference if its a keeper. Tech cloth is a negative for quite a few, but if in good order then ok.

Keys not an issue like the 3200, but you would like 2......costly to reprogramme a new one.

Will put up list of indies for you...see whose nearest, link to car at Marshalls?

I like it apart from the tech trim.
I would check exactly what service was done at Graypaul as it could be a way to try and "legitimise" a car with otherwise poor service history.
I think Shiltech is closest to Melton and they would give you an honest and thorough check of the car.
As said above DO NOT purchase or start seriously negotiating without an independent inspection.

Hi there, yes get an indie inspection done, but more important than that for me is the history, it must have history otherwise you might be buying a lemon, a lemon that you cant sell on......
Shiltech have had some very good reviews from guys off here......

Red looks lovely and pretty rare....better than all those black and grey cars out there..Be a bit different I say...(no offence meant to anyone with a black or grey car of course they are still lovely)

Newbie wanna be

So I have started to get around the GS's currently for sale, should I discount the QP. This would actually suit me better for family transport, but I do love the GS and I am very selfish....... I have a TVR Tuscan and a Grand Voyager so the kids normally get shuffled about in that, but there are the occasional football trips etc.

You could of course flog the TVR and GV and get a much newer, sportier version of the QP...ticks all the boxes.......:)
