New to the GS club....

I have been reading the forum for a few months and last week picked up my new (to me) 2005 GS, which I am falling totally in love with. I can't ever imagine getting bored of the noise as it lunges for the redline.

Having owned 4 Alfas (including a 156 Selespeed for my sins) I am braced for the expected issues, but wanted to ask a couple of questions.

- While the engine warms up fairly quickly, the water temperature seems to fluctuate slightly at speed and never quite reaches 90 degrees. Is this normal?

- The burst of revs does not always occur when starting, should I think about changing the spark plugs or could it be something else?

Thanks to everyone for such an informative forum, I hope to contribute soon!

Morning Zep and welcome,

What a great car, any chance of some pics?

Your issues, the water temp thing will be the fan resistor. This causes the low speed fan not to cut in and results in the temp up and down cycle in traffic. It should not sit at 90 degrees when on a run so that sounds right.

The low rev starting thing....I am experiencing that two and I know a few other are also. I have heard this can be related to the fan resistor or the water temp sensor but I personally think its a fuel starvation issue. There is to the right of the engine, up by the bulkhead a non return valve in the fuel line which are known to stick.

If you do find out what the issue is, can you PM me.

Also, if your battery is not brilliant change it, these cars are extremely battery sensitive.

I also have the thing where it doesn't always do the burst of revs when starting the car. I've changed the water temp sensor and the resistor so we can rule that out. fuel starvation sounds a reasonable explanation though

Ok, I think we need to get Marios on this one, I'll PM him and see if he can help.

I have the starter thing too! Sometimes a burst of revs, sometimes not. Just thought it was a characteristic (notice how i didnt say flaw) of the car!

Welcome to SM and congratulations on the choice of car.

The starting revs thing sometimes happens to mine. If it does start a bit 'limp', I generally stop and re-start and it sorts itself.

Earls Barton? My folks used to live there, West Street IIRC. I'm often in Wellingborough in the GS so keep your eyes peeled :)

Another with the revs things, particularly when it's very hot (the car, not Scotland of course!). Doesn't seem to have any ill effect so I just ignore it.

Same here, when hot. On one occasion it died immediately, did that maybe 6 times.
Not done it sense. AMF makes a certain amount of sense.

Thank you everyone for the helpful responses and making me feel welcome! I will start my investigation with the fan resistor.

Marios - thanks for the info - Would an AFM fault show up with a standard EOBD code reader (Snap-on) or will it need some time on an SD3? It is intermittent, sometimes it revs on start up, other not. I have got a set of PMA8R's on their way, was going to try that and look over the air filter etc too.

Woody - I'll keep my eyes and ears peeled...

Conaero - Pics to follow - I need to wash a few of the dead insects off first!!

Yes, tried a full leather one but like the contrast. Although I might go to leather when I get bored of cleaning it!

Mine is tech cloth and I love it. Warm in winter and cool in summer.

Looks like James' old car, I sold it last year, did you get it from ADG? If so, you've got a belting example.

No, it has been through ADG about 2 years ago. Got it from a place up north. Loving the whole experience so far, including the forum
