So I did it! After few months of searching, took the plunge and bought myself a 2004 Cambicorsa. Just fell in love with it when I saw it though, and now thinking have I done the right thing - all that glitters is not gold etc.

Drove it back 80 odd miles, and it seemed fine. (Although was raining, so obviously didn't take to any extremes) The gear changes have a little bit of a lag though - is this something I should have urgently looked at? Know in hindsight should have got it looked over by an indie, but it was in generally good condition and was a couple of k under my budget, so thought if needed to spend a little extra, I could budget for that.

Couldn't stop smiling last night, but then had this worry period!

Welcome, hopefully can get that sorted, usually clutch or F1 pump if it is related to gear change but someone who owns a 4200 will be along soon to comment and offer advice. Hope you can start to enjoy it soon!

If you are driving it in sport mode, and without the Auto button engaged, the lag may just be that you're driving it too slowly. The changes tighten up with speed / acceleration. If you are not in sport mode or driving in auto, try turning the former on and the latter off
: )

The other thought is that you may be used to a slicker dual clutch if you've come from something more modern, this is pretty old technology.

At low speeds, the software can be more concerned with your comfort, but things should liven up once you're making progress.

If it persists, get the clutch PIS checked as that could be it.

As Chris said. It may simply be that you're expecting faster.
Take it out of Auto and leave it in Sport. If you're anywhere near other members, pretty sure we could arrange a comparison session.

Thanks Guys. Great to finally be part of such a great community. Didn't have it in sports mode, and like you guys say - wasn't really changing at high revs. Was more apparent when using the paddle shifts than in auto mode. Was actually quite smooth in auto mode. Maybe, it was just the way I was driving it. Will see how it repsonds when drive it later in the week. I'm based near heathrow, so would be good to meet up with other members.

Looking forward to being fully at ease with it

Congratulations on your purchase. You'll soon get used to the gearbox and how to get the best from it - sounds like you didn't have the ideal circumstances to explore it. Good to see you checked that the Auto button works - never press it again!!

I'm 20 minutes from Heathrow and always happy to take a fellow Maser owner out in the yellow beast.

That'd be great mate. Looks awesome. Let me know when's good for you. Did I read somewhere there was something going on in Hayes around June?

Welcome, I've just taken the plunge too, I can't believe how many people have taken an interest in my car, even those I thought wouldn't even know what it was!

Enjoy!

Welcome again, and as the others have said, the gearchanges can be appalling at low speeds, but put it in Sport Mode, and press on a bit - it will all become clear :)

Welcome! I'm down in London (along with the car) for the next few weeks so would be good to arrange a little meet if anyone can? I've so far missed all others :(

Also, don't lift your your foot off the accelerator when changing gear. Some people very gently lift, which you may eventually do. But generally don't completely lift off, as that will give you a much slower gear change.

I had a 4200 some years ago... Loved the gear change .. but every time it went into Maranellos it came back slack as a yak... It seems they habitually adjusted the speed of change for the average driver that struggled with the cc box.... this was in 2003 / 04

Anyway, a quick call and a man with a laptop arrived to plug in and recalibrate the gear change at my house.... within 20 mins it was restored to a crisp setting - at no charge - (and properly brutal in sport mode)...

Thanks guys - makes much more sense. Will give it a better drive when (IF) weather picks up. Will probably try and take to Autofinnica (Spelling?!?) or another close by independent to give the once over anyhow.

Look forward to meeting some of you soon

Yep - Was guilty of doing that too!

Thanks. So much conflicting advice! One owner told me ALWAYS leave in auto, as you can never do the gear changes quick enough. Didn't understand logic of that myself. (Why would they even bother having the manual paddle shifts if that was the case?!?)

Anyhow, I have it booked in to have a look over at Autoffinicia next Saturday. looks like good weather this weekend, so will get it out on the roads and see if can start getting used to it.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!
