Thanks. So much conflicting advice! One owner told me ALWAYS leave in auto, as you can never do the gear changes quick enough. Didn't understand logic of that myself.

Can you tell me who that owner is.....I think the SportsMaserati Don needs to pay him a night-time visit!

When I had one of these I can't remember ever using the auto button... (that was for the Wife's occasional use)..... The CC gift is a work of genius and hugely satisfying once you've got to know it .. The only way to drive them... take alfi boys advice...

BTW.. you have found the crawler gears for parking I hope... I came across a dealer recently who had had several of these and was unaware of this function... can't imagine how he ever parked in a tight spot without them...

For real ?.... When I got mine back in 2003 I was too scared to put it in the garage - as it's tight - and with the hair trigger throttle it was easy to see me launching it through the back wall...
When I was shopping for my GT recently - an independent trader had had quite a few 4200 CC's through his doors and we were chatting about the gearbox and he too was moaning about manouvereing in a tight spot..

After a few weeks of having mine I found that the car is fitted with crawler gears for precisely that... both forward and reverse... I can't quite recall how they were engaged .. and it's not obvious.. but a good case for RTFM... (read the ******* manual )... I think you had to lift the little stick or hold the paddle for a few secs or something like that.... whilst footbrake on... Whatever... bloody useful.. and essential for parking without incident... but if a dealer - who's seen a few of these was unaware .. then there's probably a few owners who've never found them as well...
How often do any of us actual read the owners manual on anything...

All clear ?

Are you talking about ice mode? I doubt it as that's all about regulating wheelspin, but crawler mode is something I've never heard of or read about in the manual...

Guys the early CC cars did in fact have a parking mode on the gearbox which was designed to assis you parking on hills etc...it was so useless it was dropped at one of the first CC software upgrades.

If you have an early instruction manual it explains that if you hold the up or down paddle for a few seconds it will go into this mode and if I recall correctly the R/1 flashes. ..all this from memory so it may not be 100% correct.

Nope ... that was just a button to engage and simply started you less aggressively ... No these were different... much the same as engaging the low ratio box on my land rover for climbing very steep gradients..

You could tell when you'd engaged them as the screen showing 1 or R gear selected would flash intermittently.. .. as I say .. it's a long time ago for me.. I sold the car in 06 or 07... and I can't recall whether it was something I found in the Manual or by accident... but I'm pretty sure that from neutral you had to hold the paddle to select 1 in place for 5 secs until the selected gear display started flashing... it would then move at snails pace even with a few revs rather than sprint forward like a greased whippet...

I hadn't thought that this would be news to anyone on here... but maybe it's not been discussed much .. cos if you know there there you assume everyone else does .. and if you don't then it's not something you would think of raising ..

Hope that helps..

Safrane is spot on .... surprised they dropped it... I found it very useful and essential for putting mine away...

Is the 4200 box or software that different to a GS? Never once did mine feel in the slightest bit difficult at slow speed or in reverse. It sometimes felt expensive (ie clutch wear) in slow moving traffic but never once "difficult" and I'm a numpty at parking!

The GS came with software update Sofast2 as did the facelift 4200s.

You can up grade to latter versions but you are not able to regress to earlier ones if you update.

I have no trouble with mine, either. I seem to recall discussing this, and tried it on my 4200 with no noticeable effect, even though the selector flashed.

Sounds like an upgrade to have then on an early car if things are as bad as that. Useful to know, thanks.

Maybe I'm just a woose.... but it was all new and shiny then and my garage v tight with very little margin for error...

Ultra sensitive throttle and my CC box was calibrated for minimal clutch slip and breakneck changes... maybe thats why.. any way for me it was a definite plus.. Perhaps the software upgrades improved the original setup..

Not tried putting the GT in the same garage yet ... I've been too busy to clear it... less of an issue with the auto box.. but still it's going to be a tight fit...

The Discovery goes in... but better visibility in that... and as my wife drives it there's not a straight panel on it.... We'll see ... still getting used to the size of the front end... seems to be shrinking the more I drive it..
