New clutch needed

Just returned from my 31k service at Mike Roberts - no problems at all apart from the clutch showing 96% wear!! It had been playing up and with the PIS point reading 5.2 it's definitely an accurate reading.

Mike recommended Meridien Modena as doing a good job and being well priced at £2.5k. (put my chocolate stained tech cloth in perspective!) :sad2:

They are not exactly local to me but price is important! Any other recommendations? They will need to carry out the balancing after fitting.

YHTM.....I know they used to have a quote getter on Supercarhub...not sure if its still on, but you could pm Andrea and ask her or join site and see what shows up.

Do check whats included in the price.....some offer to collect and deliver.....or pm Loz and ask him what he got his done for

I am registered but the site only seems to return quotes for servicing. I've submitted details so will see if anything comes back. I could ring round myself but would prefer a recommendation for someone a bit closer to London.

Dick lovetts swindon will quote you happy at around the £1800 mark inc vat , that will include a, new clutch, new spiggot bearing and release bearing , in this day and age £2500 is way off the mark, just recently had my Gransport done so its a recent price quote

I was under the impression that a complete new clutch was about £1500-£1600. That was what I was quoted at Autoshield.

I think the standard clutch quote is for clutch only without the bearings. The spigot and bell-house bearings are in-expensive, but the release bearing is another 300+ notes. Doesn't really affect the labour as they're in there anyway.

Plus need to check condition of flywheel......some recommend changing it at every 2nd clutch.......

You can get a clutch done for around the £1k mark if you hunt around, there were a couple of people battling at this price.

This will include the plate and cover only, the bearing is an extra. Add the VAT and bearing and you will be over £1500 by quite some margin.

Also, get the spigot and bellhousing bearing done, they are cheap. If a your clutch bearing has done 31k miles then I would suggest changing it. The rule of thumb is change the bearing every other clutch change.

Franks flywheel above is also a very valid point. Believe it or not the flywheel is not that pricey, between 2 and 3 hundred from memory.

If you plan to keep the car for the next 3 years, its best to do it all as its the only real weak spot on the GS.

Also, insist that you want the later dual tang clutch plate. I am sure there are no single tang (weak and prone to collapse) left, but its best to show the dealer you know what your talking about and also say you want all your old bits back.

I don't really class it as a weak point Matt....but a costly point...and given that the replacement is a double tang plate plus advice on driving the car......they do seem to be lasting longer......and of course not that long ago it was much dearer to change them as there was less competition.

A days work in labour and as Matt says well worth while getting the extra few things included!

Think you'll find it hard to get a clutch priced around the Grand now , for quite some months the clutch has been around the £710 plus Vat , why do you think Maserati named their cars after hurricanes coz their parts fluctuate like the wind

Meridian Modena quoted me £2500 to £3200 which included new flywheel, bell housing bearing etc.

An independent quoted me £1700 including VAT for the same.

Not really....but you can see what the wear actually was, plus that in order to put new stuff in....they had to take old bits out....ie work actually done!!!!

Speaking of clutch, are there any signs that it needs replacement? I have "achieved" to add 1% to the sd2/3 tester, every 1000 kms i drive. Today i reached 70000kms, with no slipping yet. Will it slip sometime, or will it refuse to engage gear suddenly? Any experience?

It's not sudden, but the clutch will start to miss gears. this can be accompanied by a flashing gear indicator. It tends to be at the extremes - selecting first from neutral or selecting 6th from 5th. As I understand it, clutch wear is measured using a magnet that above 50 percent wear is very hit and miss; additionally if you have a pre MY'05 4200, then you'll need to adjust the PIS on the SD2 (so not self adjusting) as the clutch wears, so if you're on 70% I'd say the PIS setting needs to be towards it's minimum.

FWIW, Giallo put a clutch in for me about 3-4 years ago. I think it was around the 1300 quid mark all in. I got mine changed at just 60% but then I'm a fussy bugger.

Good thread. Reminds people why the 4200 is getting cheap. Big service, clutch, brakes, fuel cans, ancilliary belt etc and you could be facing a bill for £5k even if you shop around. Puts into context why when buying these cars, condition is highly relevant to the asking price.
