Having had the flu and the bad weather a few weeks ago, I had not had a chance to use the GS for several weeks... Anyway today looked nice so planned a nice run to the SW, possibly to meet SW piston heads on the way. Running behind time went to the garage and hoped the battery would be OK. It wasn't, but there was still some power to release the doors etc. Get second car and jumper cables and open the battery compartment door. Whaaaaaat? No only was there a nasty smell but there was also a huge pile of broken up felt piled up between the battery corner and the compartment door. I was surprised but not as surprised as Micky who tumbled out of his bed and scampered around the boot. Threw out his "bedding" (knowing that there would be a more to do later) and jumped the car -it started immediately as usual. Anyway, had a nice drive visiting my boyhood haunts and got back home just after sunset. Right-ho now to sort the boot. Opened the boot again and the smell was even worse. Pulled out all the linings and washed them with liquid flash and a hose. But the felt/neoprine sound floor insulation around the battery has had it. ****! It should be replaceable but I can't see it in Eurospares... Any ideas how I can replace this with new. If you are wondering, Micky escaped with his life into the garden -but no more Maserati Mouse Comfort Inn for him (the cats have been told)!

Cheers M

Comical as this may seem , it has a really serious side with huge financial implications , speak to any of the main dealers and mice have been the cause of so many car fires through chewed wiring , imagine if they have got through into various crannies and chewed the loom in vatious places , it can make for a ticking time bomb , last time i was at Maranello's they had a 3200 in that was in for a total rewire and engine rebuild due to mice , bill was around the 10K mark

This particular one was being funded by the owner Frank, me matt and enzo were invited in to view the workshop , not sure whether the car was insured or they refused to pay out , car was kept in a covered barn in the country

Had a mouse take up residence in my Ducati 888 sp4. Fugger chewed up the air filter and fed it down the induction tubes. Needless to say I tried to start it without knowing and fugged the engine as it ran for 60 seconds! that was a £5k rebuild I did not need!

Mouse traps & bait boxes in the garage now.

Must be related to a mates mouse who nested in the exhaust of his 916 - luckily it got blown out and not sucked in, made a horrible smell.

I think anybody would make a horrible smell if they got blown out of a 916 exhaust RSM.
Sorry about your bike Pibbow, these mice are buggers, you too Aero, not nice, pity you didn't catch the little chap, maybe he won't come back.

It was actually an edible doormouse, Glis glis.

Still hoping for a lead on the replacement sound insulation tho'...

No, the sound insulation panels are not there... The bits I am looking for sit around the battery and are made of layers of neoprene(?) and felt sandwich.

you may well have to make them up , you could always ask some one to supply you a template of theirs, neoprene and felt should easily be available

I had NATO's bravest mouse living under the stairs, despite having 3 cats who camped outside the cupboard door for days, unbeknown to me the crafty devil had made a nest in my bike leathers arm, fortunately he had only chewed the storm flap from behind the zip and not any other bits.
I was not best pleased when come spring last year my leathers left a pile of chewed mouse bedding plus the remains of a packet of bird seed on the floor when I put them on. Mice as you know have weak bladders and continualy urinate so it was off to the cleaners.

The cats have been sacked for one of those electronic rat and mice plug in things.
