MC Shift – What type of gearbox is it really?

In my experience you can select N at speed and then pull the paddle and it will select the appropriate gear. Only at very low speeds in traffic if I “childishly” select neutral to “rev a little” and am close to stationery, I may have to apply the brake to select a gear.

Yup, that’s exactly what I would have done :)

There's a lot of discussion and I am happy to be corrected but I believe the informed opinion may be expressed as 'They share the same basics, but there are so many differences that you really can't call it a shared engine.

If you go by the engine reference, the are all F136 engines, with different letters afterwards to signify the internal / external component difference. For example, the engine in the 458 Speciale is F136FL whereas the engine in a Granturismo MC Stradale (2 seat) is a F136YK. The version fitted to the A1 GP car was just called F136.

Given that a significant number of parts are interchangeable, that the cylinder block is the same casting, it would be fair to say it’s the same engine type, but it is not the same engine. The Maserati version sounds much much better anyway.

Yes, think its probably under 5mph or similar you have to apply the brake first.

I tried to simulate a racing start once with my ZF. ie foot on the break while building revs. I did the rev gently as I didn't know what to expect and got a rather nasty "graziano" so abandoned that experiment rather quickly! I wonder what's different between the GT S ZF auto gearbox and programming to the 4.2 one, so that it allows racings starts without rogering the gearbox!

It's direct?

That's for the ZF? Great to know. I should check the manual but it's deep in the depths of the boot still

No. That's the MC.

Now I was convinced that you had to go through reverse to get to neutral on the ZF, but having just checked the manual, I was totally wrong, so I can't really see any reason you might not want to go D>N rev it and back to D.

I wouldn't do that at speed. I imagine the torque converter might not be happy about it.

fun fact: you can bump start a MC Shift car, ignition on, good push and a couple of right paddle clicks and off she goes. Ask me how I know, some other time.

Actually good to know!
I've only been caught out once and had a new battery since, but worth remembering.
