Okay Phil but over 30 years of carbon and varnish etc you would really notice the benefits with better fuel consumption and performance as a bonus.
Just taking the head off the head gasket would look grim with age.

I'd bet it's been done. I will check the A4 folder for receipts to see

I wasn't actually joking when I asked about the de-coke. If it's pinking on 95 RON, but not on 98 and it was designed to run on 95, something must be causing that. Either the timing is out / unable to adjust through its designed range, or something else is making it pre-ignite. Coke always used to be a favourite culprit.

Let us know what you find from the records

Kjet were designed to run on 4 star (98 RON) and on the fuel filler cap it states 98 RON SUL to be used. It's all down to the higher compression ratio of the engine, it will run on 95 RON standard BUT it will pink, you can knock the distributor back until it stops and it will run better but as I said since a few tanks of this SUL are in there now it really does pull like a train.

Yep had the neck done a few years after the tank was replaced...still needed to replace most of the fueling system. She was running v.well before I sold her to Phil 's colleague who then sold her at big mark up...wiah I still had it as my daily.

Didn't know he was going to do that Peter was a bit surprised as he bought a Triumph Herald convertible which was no comparison to the Golf but they liked the old stuff.
