Maserati SUV

Found this new story which goes on about having the Hemi 5L V8 under the bonnet. Now that engine does have some pedegree, what are your thoughts on the use of this engine in the GTS/QP, leaving the smaller V6 for the entry level small QP'esque car?

Maserati Hemi, how does that sound?

Supercar manufacturer Maserati will take on a new segment by manufacturing the company’s first SUV.

After the rumor that Jaguar will go on the same segment too, Maserati wants to get there first and Chrysler might be that opportunity. The new Maserati SUV could be based on the brand-new Jeep Grand Cherokee which can only mean one thing: power coming from the famous HEMI V8, somewhere around 5.0 liters.

If the new Maserati SUV will be based on the Jeep platform and powered by a HEMI V8 than the car probably won’t develop so many ponies, compared to its V6 3.0 turbo diesel “brother” which can hit the European and eventually Asian auto market.
The Maserati company could surprise us all by presenting its new SUV during an international auto show sometimes next year, but photo or no photo, one question remains: How can Maserati manufacture an SUV worthy of its badge?

Styling wise......?!.....not breaking new ground......not very eye catching....as a matter of fact not nice at all.......bean counters rule......having said that if it works dynamically and ups the ante, then a bit of competition for Porsche et al

STOP THE BUS!

that vehicle, in my opinion, will NOT be a Maserati.

The engine is the heart- it's like Zonda and their Merc engines- very efficient, high tolerance, high output gear, but what are you actually paying for that has pedigree? Suspension and seats? A nice dashboard? Body work...?

For me- it's got to be a complete package. I doubt this will go into production at the moment- isn't this the 3rd Maserati SUV concept in the last 10 years...?

sorry- I don't wish to appear cynical, but the engine is everything.

Yes, call a priest someone, we need someone to administer the last rights... Maserati building an SUV, ugh, I feel physically sick.

Pat.......the same priest has been on duty for the last 80 odd years..........Maserati will survive....albeit.....not in its purest form......as it has done over successive production cycles......

Hold on guys, I accept the SUV concept is terrible and like Pats "call a priest for the last rights" but what about the engine, how do you feel about the HEMI, it is a pedigree Muscle Car engine.

Its no Ferrari lump agreed but is it an aceptable replacement or an total mistake?

Commercial realities may determine this but a yank donk in an Italian car irrespective of power output is sacrilige . Since Ferrari's input, the marque has attainted pedigree, hate to see it slip back to Citroen/Chrysler days

Oh the thought........M class...Yuk...Its a van...

If you believe the rumours about the Maserati SUV, and let's face it they're most probably true, then they're set to share the same chassis and engine range.

The way i see it , a good part of the exclusivity of owning a masser is the added kudos of the Fezza based engine, sort of gave the Masser much needed leg up when times were'nt that good , we know it did the trick and put maserati seriously back on the map , where it has continued to stay this last 12/13 years ,

Altho the Hemi as Matt says has a bit of heritage , wow factor it hasn't got , in most europeans eyes its just another gas guzzling american pilem high sellem cheap lump , and wouldn't rock the average petrolheads boat , its needs something with real street cred either another Fezza based lump or as i have advocated the Nissan Gtr engine and gearbox which without any shadow of doubt has a definate wow factor , even and Audi V10 would be better than a Hemi , and you all know what i think of german design , but that engine is well proven too and loads of street cred earned through the R8 and the Lambo

Even in a Chelsea tractor Loz? I'm less fussed about the SUV. I appreciate it's a segment Maserati need for the US market, and don't really care what they put in it, so long as it's relatively capable and doesn't make the marque look foolish.

There's another thread regarding the new QP range, and the indicators seem to be more encouraging there with a Ferrari derived engine for the big brother at least.

But if they are aiming to really crack the American market then the Hemi is the Holy Grail to American petrolheads.

beg to differ Benny/Ian ,One of the reasons Maserati North Amaerica has done so well , is the Fezza Maserati Mystique , putting in a Hemi will totally negate that

Anything else is just a money grabbing bastardised version.......of what we all love.
