What grates on me is the talk of Thatcher detroying British manufacturing.
Lets be absolutely clear, British industry destroyed itself.
British Leyland for example, cronic lack of investment, woeful management, crippling industrial relations, shocking product quality, third world productivity, the list goes on.
Without Thatchers reforms of the trade unions and outdated working practices does anyone believe that the UK would still have a car manufacturing industry today? Not a chance in **** !
Today we have some of the most efficient car factories (Nissan Sunderland for example) in the World, and record productivity and exports.

Agree with most comments about resolve and having balls plus she put a sense of pride back into being English.

To give you an example of how bad things were, you could get any part for a BL car in the pubs in the Midlands....they were thieving from their own pockets....idiots!

The Ireland thing, well, it seems we should not go there. I must confess to not know the ins and outs of this, all I remember is the streets of London and NI getting bombed and the innocent dying, violence is no way to resolve anything but I am going to stop there.

Probably not a good idea to discuss either politics or religion on a forum such as this!
However, I think we should consider those close to her and the lost they must be feeling at this time. She was a mother and a grandmother after all.
I met her on a number of occasions due to the fact I had a close family member in her first administration in 1979 and I can only say that I found her very warm and friendly and not at all like her public persona.
Please don't shoot me for saying that, it's just a personal note.

RIP. A great leader with conviction, she had bigger balls than any other leader we've seen since Churchill. She was somebody who took action instead of spouting a load of hot air like the namby pambies of today. Sure, she made some mistakes (poll tax!), but bringing down the likes of Scargill was some of her best work.

What a shame we don't have her to take on idiots like Bob Crow. That hideous creature Abu Qatada wouldn't still be in the UK either if she was still in charge!

I am surprised that a non Brittish guy (Dem) started a thread about one of your most important politician. In Greece it would have been #1 subject to discuss for days.

As you can see from the posters biting their tongues from not wishing to speak ill of the dead you can get some idea that opinions run strongly on this matter.

Ok guys, this is starting to wander in to unwanted territory, a couple of the more offensive posts have been removed.

Can I just remind you we are all friends here, lets keep it that way.

Having come from a crappy little mill town in the north I must be quite odd with my opinions.
Mills and mines were doomed as soon as Asia started to do the same for a 10th of the price...I'm glad my tax £ were not used to subsidies the remaining ones.
Having lived on my own since I was 17 I would loved the Community Charge (Polltax) why should I pay the same as my neighbour. who has a wife and four kids?
Wish she had a better cabinet at the end who has some spine and continued to support here policies that got this country moving again.

Agreed. Whilst she was clearly losing it towards the end of her term in office I reckon she did a lot more for us than against us and, IMO, she doesn't deserve the level of opprobrium being heaped upon her by those w*****s who bought the 'party packs'.
