Hi all,

Been enjoying the car until the other day, when I was on my way home and suddenly the engine revved bad, and exhaust sounded like ****. Then got the engine light on with SLOW DOWN flashing, then limp mode..................

Upon finally getting the car home very slowly, I let it cool down, then hit the cat areas with my fists, and sure enough, one side sounded like it was blocked full of busted ceramic. Engine wont rev very high now either, as expected.

Whats the best option and where to purchase ?

I was thinking the Larini replacements were a good option, but other options would be great, or can i just rip the guts out all together and carry on ?

Many thanks

Gary

Fossy can I have your old ones please? We might use it as a template to make some de cat pipes?

Just hold on to them if you would for now, I will pick them up next time I am your way.

Ok, i'm not going the larini route under any circumstances, at 2500 pounds for a pair of pipes ????? its a 4200, not a veyron.

Been tig welding for 25 years, and have a nice pair of new 200 cell stainless cats here ready to weld as replacements for the rears, and going to gut the fronts (which one has detonated anyway). Dont care about the squashed bit as it has more area than the original cats, its fast enough, and its all cost to repair....................200 quid. I got loads of stainless pipe here, and cannot see how a larini alternative is worth a grand, and its sold for 2 and a half times that ?? I will post up a piccy of them once done, and if anyone else falls foul of the dreaded cat thing, drop your pipes in.

Larinis are really dear in my opinion. Fossy, hope none of the remainder of the cats got sucked into the engine, that's a big problem when it happens.

Fossy, agree 2500 is a huge amount of money, but have you seen what the oem part costs?

Wouldn't suggest to built a pair on your own. Maseratis are not cheap cars and by buying one means that you can afford them. If you don't really care, then i would suggest a used one, with the risk of high miles or cracks,as the primer cats are ceramic.

Totally agree!
Being in the stainless steel process pipework industry, knowing how much the raw stainless tube costs, 200 cell cats cost, and how much work one of my TIG pipe fitter welders can do, £2,500 really is taking the mick!

Agreed, but that doesn't mean that both systems aren't drastically overpriced. IMO, all MJ and Fossy are saying is that the standard system can be improved for a lot less than Maserati and Larini charge.

Life is too short not to hear that larini under my feet. :)

Cats are very important for a car's proper running. It's not only the stainless steel construction, the exhaust works under specific temperature and under specific pressure. If someone wanted to make his own cats, where could he found all this info? Difficult job and the end result could be risky.

Good luck anyway,

You wound not make your own cats, 200 cell sports cats are available from reputable sources from £100 each.
The £2,500 is more decause its for a Maserati, and the suppliers adjust the price accordingly. There is as much development and material cost for shall we say a cheaper brand car, but the cost would be less than £2,500!
Saying all this, if I could ask £2,500, and owners pay £2,500, good for them!
A friend of ours has just bought a Channel handbag for £5,000, they must be rolling on the floor in laughter at the money they make at the Channel board meeting!

Absolutely what I meant, spot on. I needed a pair of O2 sensors for the car, and Mase-rapey wanted a huge amount for them, literally astonishing, then I purchased the original Bosch parts from World Car Parts for £70 each (a quarter of maserati price !!) , and it seems that every other aftermarket company, manufacturer, stockist sees a Maserati owner and goes....CA-CHINGGGG, and some owners believe your getting something so much more imperial, regal, quality, whatever, when these parts are also used on other cars like alfa romeo ie. F1 pumps etc, and can purchase the same pump for 3rd of maserati price. Not going on about it any more, but was quite offended by all the ''great offers'' by the exhaust industry for maserati owners for their extra special grade stainless, and their superior TIG welding and ........... when its just bent 304 or 316 tube made in a sweat shop by payroll fabricators, and iv seen the Larini pipes up close.......nothing special, and for the cost of them, they should at least be titanium, and don't get too hung up on the ''exacting design'' of the pipework either, so long as the flow rate is maintained, your good to go (and its obviously not that critical, as if it was, they would'nt have bunged poxy great 400 then 600 lumps of ceramic in their would they, which then break up religously (just another testiment to the quality parts used by Maserati).

NB. I contacted a leading cat manufacturer and bought mine direct for Just over 100 quid, and speaking to one of the guys, he said i'd be suprised just who they supply !! which is what I was saying about allot of these regal manufacturers and their products, they buy from a national supplier for peanuts, then whack em together and charge like an injured bull !

Fortunately through this forum, we are coming up for much more reasonable alternatives to lots of parts, (at the same quality!) to keep are cars on the road.

Funnily enough I've just done a new set of front pipes with 200 cell steel cats for a 2008 Quattroporte. Supplied to Graypaul. The cats are the same as Larini use, and the pair
were just over a grand. This is also my day job, and I cannot work out were £2500 comes from.

Guys..apart from the theory i described above, also have in mind that any company of the world is a company, which means, it has running expenses, that gives additional cost to the product. I am sure people can built their own cats, their own wings, their own seats, reducing the end price comparing to the market.
We drive Maseratis, they're not cheap cars, you also pay a 'glamourous' fee on every part you get..this is life. None of us here is Bill Gates or has his own petrol drilling company. For all of us money is a mean we earn with lot of working, i also do some fixing in the coupe, but cats building is a risky thing.
