Just had my second "Maserati Moment", and I've only had the car for two weeks!

The first one comes when you hear the noise from the back, you can't stop smiling and any thought of the purchase price goes fluttering out of your mind...

...the second one is when the engine warning light comes on and you start to wonder just how much it's going to cost you!
Ha!

Or stick a bit of insulation tape over the light on the dash, cheap and easy fix.

Engine management light is rarely a big problem. It's usually a lambda sensor or something minor. Gearbox light or suspension are a little more of a worry.

Thanks Mr G.

That's what I've gathered from all the wonderful support on this forum. I bought it from David at ADG so I'll give him a call and see if he can get it cleared...if not, I'll pop along to one of the places in the list that AndyK posts occasionally for a check. I'm off to Yorkshire this weekend to see family, and hoping for a cruise round the NY moors in her.

Oh dear. Engine lights are not that common from my experience, on a 3200 yes, but the 4200 or GS that I have never had any.

What I would do is save yourself the petrol and buy one of the £20 scanners off ebay, get the code, post it on here, clear the light then forget about it.

Of course if its serious like a failing cat or something, then sure, ADG will sort it and be entrusted to our Mathew at Giallo.

So, my newly e-bay'd Maxiscan MS309 (£19.95, free shipping) tells me that it's P0491 and P0492...
Secondary Injection System Insufficient Flow on banks 1 & 2 - one error per bank.

Worth a 1 hour 30 minute trip to Gialo's to investigate?

Chris, now you want to phone up Mathew and tell him the codes and he will know exactly what they relate to, that way you will know if you need to get it sorted sooner or later.

But basically it sounds like you have low fuel pressure in both fuel rails which would suggest you have a failing fuel pump or there is a restriction like duff carbon canisters.

I think your fuel pump is the submersible type, in the fuel tank itself and a pig to get to.

Oops, I missed an important word...

It's the secondary AIR injection system, so maybe a vacuum hose or is there an air pump?

Reading around this could be anything from a loose hose to a busted sensor in the Cat to a broken solenoid to carbon build-up in the head, but some of that came from other forums about bmw's so not sure how relevant it may be to the 4200.

There are enough variables to make a trip to Kent worth it as I'm off for a few long drives this weekend, but I'll call Giallo's before I set off & see what they say.

Will post the results for future reference.

Thanks all.

Well, Matthew plugged in the Maserati box of electrical wonder and diagnostic delight, and got back two error codes that it didn't recognise...

...which is a bit odd. The machine was allowed to clear the codes, and they didn't come back, so maybe just the car bedding-in to being used again after a time of lay-over in a garage somewhere.

The codes were manufacturer codes, 1169 and 1170, neither of which have any kind of write-up in the diag. machine. He tried Maserati support, but nothing back form them yet. Drove the car home, varied driving from enthusiastic to a nice long queue on the ring-road round the city, but no new lights. Fingers & toes crossed seems to be the way with these cars. Ha!
