How old is too old for a brand new tyre?

The tyres on Alex's camper were all very old, when we got it going last year on limited funds he put two new ones on the front replacing two very cracked ones, the spare was pretty bad but holding air well and we put the two remaining 'good' ones on the back. He completed the trip to Lands End & Lizard & back no issues but on his trip to Lowestoft a few weeks later one of the rears de-laminated and burst suddenly on the A12 near Woodbridge. The rears it turns out were 21 years old! Lesson learnt and the spare was changed before this trip so he is on fresh rubber all round and no issues whatsoever.
