Have you tried reverse as well as forward, or is that a dosy question?? it could be a brake shoe has moved and jammed. You could try wheel off and hit hub with a hammer, see if that releases hub..??

Sounds like maybe the shoe spring has gone and one, or both shoes have jammed up against the hub.

Sounds like the friction material has come off and got stuck over the other side.... :( Never understood why they are not riveted as well as bonded, also why they are not at least shower proof. First job I did on mine was to replace a set of shoes after one did this. Mine often jams on the drive if it sits a while but reverse seems to spring it.

Yep agree with Newton the linings have come away, rotated round on each other and locked one of the wheels up.

Get the recovery service out and get them to remove the rear wheel, caliper and disc on the affected side and remove the material.

You will have to back off the shoes to get the disc off by way of putting a blade screwdriver through the hole in the bottom of the disc to slacken off the adjuster.

Italian Maserati foible i know , but its been mentioned before , try and make sure before you park up for an extended time especially after you have washed the car or have driven in the wet, that the rear hubs are dried off as best you can , a short spin with handbrake lightly applied ,seems to have done the trick for me as ive not experienced de-laminating pads ,only the odd sticky one, better still if the cars on the flat leave it in gear and no handbrake on

Good advice Loz, I have done the rear shoe cleaning by applying the handbrake on and off for a short while on a number of cars, it also keeps the shoes clear and makes them work better.

Thanks for the advice chaps - I'll know in future!

Was a total buggeration. I'm not going to use the car much over winter, I've been gradually going over it with a fine tooth comb starting from the front (wrong end!). Decided it would be a good idea to get it MOT'd so I could occasionally run it out over the winter so booked in for wednesday so put it back together for that. Got a couple of miles from home and it totally locked solid on me, right on a blind junction. Spent a couple of hours waiting for recovery in the rain - not fun, had to stand out on the corner so people coming round the bend didnt smack into me :( Could have sworn there was a warning triangle in the kit but now I know better! Couldnt risk taking it home as we werent sure we could get it off the wagon so recovered to a local garage.

Anyway popped over this morning to start taking it apart. It's the offside thats gone - soon as the disk came off the whole kit and caboodle inside fell out. Basically no friction material left on the shoe, it was just worn not delaminated - other side ok. Guess a visual check of the handbrake system isnt part of the service it got a few weeks ago :( Worst bit is it's also wrecked the hub, so basically everything outboard of the suspension arms needs to be replaced. Maserati dealer (StAlbans) prices same as Eurospares for hub and bearing assy- anywhere else I should check?

How I wish I'd started the overhaul at the back rather than the front!

Ouch - that's a sad tale there sir. I can't believe its damaged the hub? I can see the backing plate getting bent, but that can be replaced. How did the hub get damaged? i had problems with my car early on too and like the other guys am careful to run it a little after a wash or heavy rain and alsways try to use the handbrake a bit here and there so the hub inner surface does not get rough and rusty. I think a lot of people just don't use the handbrake at all thinking it will avoid problems and this is what makes the hub bearing surface rust up and get rough. The key is to use it regularly but don't leave it parked up with it on especially if it's going to be sitting for a while.

I fall into the never use the darn thing category normally so my own fault for leaving it parked up with it on. Thought it would be ok since I left it a couple of days before putting it on - only did that as I was getting the front wheels off. Oh well live and learn.

I think it was getting it onto the recovery wagon that did a lot of the damage. If he'd have had dollies with him we could probably have avoided it; still car was in a dangerous place and needed to be moved quick before it got dark.

Looks like I've got a hub carrier from David Askew, bearing and a lot of the smaller stuff I'll get new (not much diff in price between dealer and eurospares). Just need to get some shoes now - I'm NOT paying £55 for each one if I can avoid it!

Are the old shoes mangled or would they be suitable for re-lining? If they are I think there is a pheonix from Belfast Brakes that can do them for you; these are reputed to be much better than OEM ones and cheaper too. If you are stuck I have my old ones on the shelf that you could send off to be re-lined.

Good luck.

Kind offer Newton but looking to get her back in my garage asap if I can. Mine look like they're made out of that well known metal that lotus use - cheesium.

Eurospares are doing "pattern" handbrake shoes for £88 for kit of 4, in stock if anyone wants to try them. Darn sight cheaper than dealer at £48 EACH!

Speaking of dealers - which one is best to deal with for parts? Looking for a good price but also need them to hold stock as I dont want to wait for weeks.
