Thanks for the contact info, I'll try them now. I'll probably use belfast to get a spare set made up once the current drama is resolved. :)

Getting there, just need to arrange payment and delivery for the hub carrier with David Askew. Sounds like most of the smaller bits and the hub itself are in stock in maserati so hopefully sorted by end of next week. I can then resume taking it apart!

Grinnzz...are you getting a full rear bearing hub with abs sensor inbuilt? Double check it the right on for your car, they changed over the type in 2003.....need the VIN number to check with an MD and then with DA to see what car/model he took it off...............otherwise the car won't recognise it and ABS light stays on...MOT fail soon!

The hub bearing (the centre bit with the sensor) I'm getting is brand new from dealer so they checked the model year etc. Dont see the point of buying wheel bearings second hand. The hub (or what I would call the upright or hub carrier) is just a lump of metal so I have ordered that from DA. Cheers for checking!

Cant fail the MOT - it doesnt have one :) The shop it's in is where I was taking it for its MOT when it failed. Ho hum joys of renting an italian mistress :)

Cheers Robert, wasnt that bad apart from the hub really.

Loz, Frank, the price for the upright was £490, and for the hub bearing £375. Bit of a rip off really, but eurospares not much better.

Grinzz, sorry to hear about this, but glad you are getting it sorted. Sounds like it just went when you were moving, so glad your are all ok. Though a bit expensive and a pain in the A to fix.

Not sure i understand what the thoughts are on handbrake use? After driving in the wet, or after washing it, or a when it's been left in the rain - drive with the handbrake on for a short while? Does not seem to make much sense to me, if the cars already parked up with the handbrake on, what difference will a rain shower or washing it make? I understand the concept of drying it before parking. But I would'nt want to do that everytime she saw a raindrop, as you'd probably end up wearing out the handbrake.

Thoughts?

Ross,

Part of the setting of handbrakes is to drive at 20mph and pull it on and off repeatedly to 'settle' them (details on another thread) so occasional rolling use will keep the surfaces fresh. If they were only ever applied stationary the iron drums would pretty soon pit up and deteriorate. Not proposing anyone attempts a handbrake turn because that is never going to happen with a Maserati handbrake!

(Apart from a$$ing about in the snow)

Newton is spot on. Quite a few manufacturers of high end cars, in particular those with inboard handbrake shoes, state that to keep the shoes clean and ready for use, you should apply the handbrake momentarilly 2 or 3 times when moving slowly. This cleans up the surface of the shoe / drum and keeps them ready for use.

How did you rebuild your hub. The return spring for the handbrake went out in my rear drivers side wheel. When it happened it damaged a small part of the rubber seal for the bearing. Is it possible to just buy the bearings and a new seal and press it in?
