Handbrake Shoes

Hi Andy, P is absolutely right as your car is 03 and therefore you may need the shoes with the prior part number. Mine is an 04 and the later part number, so my shoes MAY not fit your car.

I'm planning to swap mine tomorrow and will take photo's. There are already photo's on here of the 3200 up to 2003 4200 shoes and I'll compare them. If they're the same, then we can proceed as planned and I'll post my old ones on to Belfast Brakes for you. If they're different, you'll just need to track down the donor shoes that are already somewhere on the forum as these WILL fit your car.

Cheers, Miles.

Hi,
Very rare that the shoes are worn away as they do nowt! Unless you are into handbrake turns of course.
Have you tried just de-glazing them with some emery paper and re adjusting properly?

Hi Keith, You're right of course, but they do seem to have a nasty habit of de-laminating, which is what one of mine has done, hence the need to replace. It may be that this is what has happened to Andy also if his garage has tried to adjust and still think it will fail MOT?

Andy, Sorry but work and weather got the better of me today and so I've not been able to change my brake shoes yet. I did however take some photo's, which are attached below, as is the link to the 3200 - early 4200 shoes. Although there are cosmetic differences I'm d@mned if I can see any differences that would affect fitment?

The shoes that I have were ordered from Eurospares last week and the delivery note states part number 170701. This is listed on their diagrams as the replacement part number for 3200 / early 4200, however I specifically discussed my 04 car. They have my details on record as I have ordered from them several times before.

Sooooo, the upshot of all this is.... I think the shoes are the same throughout. There's just a load of shenanigans with the part numbers.

So if you're desperate, just track down the 'forum' shoes that are already in circulation, or if you have a little time, bear with me until I find a few hours to replace mine.

Sorry for the delay.

Confusing, tedious, smoke and mirrors, potentially expensive - Ahhh the wonderful world of the Maserati parts network....... :-(

Hi Miles,
They look exactly the same as mine and at the moment I am not in a rush to change mine so I shall wait until you have time to change yours and take you up on your kind offer. If yours happen to need a little adjustment to fit my car then I can easily do that.

Once again many thanks for all your efforts and pics.

Get what you are saying Miles,

What happened to the good old fashioned way when they were held on with half a dozen copper rivets?
At least when the rivets started to get pollished you knew to order some more.

Hi Andy, I managed to get time on Friday to replace by rear pads and was planning to change the shoes also, however those sent to me by Eurospares are in fact wrong for my car (in spite of them having my car details recorded and my being advised accordingly). Unfortunately the removal of the old shoes lead to their pretty much complete disintegration, so I'm currently without handbrake until Eurospares send me the correct ones on Tuesday! Not the happiest bunny.

Having spoken to Eurospares just this morning I also notice they've since stopped listing the alternative shoe, so they're obviously reacting to the confusion being caused.

A couple of photo's attached.. From your comments above it does look like you may have the earlier type, so you may need to track down the other set that are doing the rounds if you want to send them to Belfast Brakes for re-lining (£35.00'ish from memory), or alternatively I can forward the Eurospares shoes that I have if you want to pay me what I paid for them, which I think was £88.00 before VAT, otherwise I'll return them for refund.

Cheers, Miles.

Send them to Belfast brakes, get them in the post Monday you will have them back by Thursday and all for £30 including VAT and delivery, cant recommend them enough.

If you send them back and get Eurospares to send the correct ones, sounds like they will have to order the and you are talking week.

These are the ones I got back from Belfast Brakes, and did not fit my GS, they were Jezzers old ones and were off a 3200

The 4200 ones have the slits and are thinner.

Thanks Matt, but Eurospares have them in stock, so with me on Tuesday. Tell me, are those shoes for your GS or from your 3200?

No prob Myles, just for the record, the ones in my pic are believed to be for a 3200.

What are Eurospares charging for the shoes, inc VAT and Delivery?

Hi Matt, yes those are definitely 3200 shoes, but also the original 4200's (up to A.ss No. 7717 whatever that means?). The part number is 170701. The 'slotted' type is the later one. Part number 194876. It fits A.ss No 7718 onwards and everything there-after.

Eurospares are now quoting £58.00 each! though I believe I got the last of some old stock at £28.00 each before VAT. They're not charging me delivery as those I have were sent in error.

I'll donate my old shoes to the forum.

Providing they fit his car, Andy is already on the list.

Nice one Myles, I think what we need to do is have any old shoes stamped, 32-42 or +4200GS

That way we you know what your getting.

The numbers you have stated above are probably the last 4didgets of the chassis number, maybe stamp then TO-7717 and 7718-ON

Guys,
If I may say,
the A.SS number stands for Assembly number and is quite different to the chassis number.
Will try to find out where this is marked or stamped and let you know,
Regards,
Enzo.

Hi Miles,
Sorry to hear about your troubles.

I now have a second car for everyday use so I think the solution suggested before by Matt is maybe the right way to go to avoid any confusion or problems. i.e. Take shoes off my own car and leave the car on Axle stands, send them to belfast then put them back on the car when they return which means at least I know they will fit perfectly. Looking at your ones god they are unbelievable but I think mine are the same as the garage supposedly adjusted them but they still don't hold anything so I think mine are completely bare metal too. I did try to take the disks off a few weeks ago but it was having non of it but i think maybe I wasn't being rough enough to take them off and should try harder. I need to losen the existing shoes so they are not in the way.

Cheers

Andy

Andy, you have to back the shoes off by way of the adjuster through the inspection hole in the bottom of the disc or you will never get them off.

...and its not just you, the handbrake is pants, best leave the car in gear, and pinch some chocks off the ferry next time you go over, I did, he he.
