Handbrake Shoes

Hi Guys,
When I had the sterring pipe replaced I asked the garage to adjust the handbrake. They told me that although it is adjusted it will not pass the MOT when the time comes. So I want to buy the shoes and replace them and I hav eseen in a few forums that other car shoes will fit the 4200 but people don't say what car. I know there was some suggestions made the last tiem about the VW Van but then other people disagreed so I am still not sure if there is such a match. I appreciate it may need a little adjustment to fit but I am more than happy and capable to do that. Anyone has any ideas for sure hich handbrake shoes will fit the 2003 cambiocorsa?

I know this has come up before so my apologies for the repeat but I need to sort this out as leaving the car in the 1st gear works fine but I just need that lttle extra assurance.

Thanks again

Andy

If you car is not your daily drive you can get your old shoes re-linned. Search on here for deatils.

Andy, the reline is by far the best route to take. You would think that all the shoes for the coupe are the same, well, they are not. So best to remove yours and leave it on the axle stands and wait, if you were to take them off on a Sunday and post them on the Monday, you would have them back by the Thursday/Friday and all for £35 including taxes and return postage. The quality is better than the originals, and they use the same glue they bond ships together with, so will be less likely to de laminate, as the OEM shoes do.

I usually would not bother with relining shoes, but Maserati want £200 for a set of shoes that would look more at home on a classic mini

Hi Guys,
I fully appreciate your fedback but the is my daily drive and relining is not an option. Even if it wasn't my daily car I can't see I can have th ecar with both wheels removed waiting for the relined shoes.

I guess I can do it the hard way and remove the shoes, put the disks and wheels back on while I wait fo rthe shoes but that just means doing the job twice. My plan was that regardless of the condition of th eshoes I just buy a new paid and replace them but not at £200 mersarti price. The alternative match I have been told is approximately £30 but what car these shoes suppose to be from is a mystery that no one seems to know.

I think I might end up doing the relining thing! The garage said they would charge £70 to change them over so I would need the pads to take to them hence the request.

You cant take the handbrake shoes out and run the car as you have the cable and the rest of the mechanism flopping around. I know this, because I considered doing the same as you suggested, but quickly worked out it would be too dangerous...if something got wrapped round the hub/wheel as speed, it does not bare thinking about.

Speed, options are limited........the one suggested by Conaero.....best one and safest.

I like your thinking Safrane! ;-)

I am actually thinking of buying a run around car for everyday use so I can then leave the car on Axles until the shoes come back.

Didn't the old post say that they have an old set in stock waiting so you dont have to disable your car?

Andrew they do have a set, but I used them and they were wrong. The GS, 3200 and 4200 do not have the same rear shoes or the set they had were not from a 3200, so its best to send your shoes, then you know they will be correct.

So what car are the donor shoes from?....can we then advise them not to use them as they are wrong?

3200 and prior to 2004 4200 - same part number.
2004 and after and GS - same (but different to above) part number.

I believe the set in circulation (where-ever they are) are 3200 / pre 2004 4200.

Andy, sorry I can't recall, do you have a 3200 or a 4200?

If it's a 4200, check Eurospares as they have alternatives (Ferrari 612 would you believe!) £88.00 for a set (until supplies exhausted) and next day delivery. This is what I have done and I will be fitting them this weekend.

If you can hang on a little while, I will happily send my old 4200 shoes to Belfast for you for re-lining, so £30 whatever quid and hopefully back with you before the end of next week.

Just one proviso if you want to take this route? Please then donate yours to the next forum member in need of a re-line.

Cheers, Miles.

Hi Miles,
That is a very generous offer and I would like to take you up on it as mine is not a MOT yet and I can wait for yours. I promise to pass mine to then next forum member who needs it. I would cover any cost that you may incur sending them to Belfast so they can then send them to me. Of course also a bottle of whiskey as a thank you.

My car is 4200 Cambiocorsa 2003.

Please let me know when you have changed yours and I shall send you my address, I can send you any money via paypal if thats easier for you.

Once again thank you for the kind offer.

Cheers

Andy, just to be sure, what month is your car....could be a late in year car, and be a model year 2004 like mine...or use a VIN number and ask at your main dealers to be sure.
