Just been informed by the garage that both my rear silencers (4.7Granturismo Auto) are seized and beyond repair. If I want my sports note back I will have to replace them! Anyone got some used ones they don't want? Or can anyone recommend a cost effective alternative? New Maser ones are about £1400 each Pus VAT! Yikes!

Seized? What does that mean? The valves are seized? Get a second opinion, it sounds like BS to me. There are many things which can cause valves to be stuck closed/open.

Beyond their capabilities for repair maybe, definitely sounds rubbish to me. If it is the valves, they can certainly be repaired

I understand the doubt.... But the garage is a very well respected Indy, and the wording on the e mail to me is clear - both silencers broken. It is the silencer valves themselves, not the actuators. The thing is that when I dropped it off, one was working a bit (albeit sluggishly) but the other one was indeed stuck fast. I thought ( and was told) that a bit of manipulation would sort them out, followed by some copper grease to stop them seizing again.
No doubt I will find out more when I pick the car up.....

Get them sent to JP Exhausts in Crewe they will fix them in no time.

Even if you had to have 2 new valves and actuators fitted your not looking at anymore than £500

If you do buy new, can I have your old ones as ill get them fixed and sell them for £1500 (sorry, being flippant to underline my point)

Thanks for the tip! Are they the same guys as Macclesfield? If so, not really that far from me!

Mine are not working properly, thankfully in for a service soon and warranty still in place. Mind the design is pap with the mechanism exposed to the elements.

so, the bods in Macclesfield cannot get to to look at my car till late summer (Business is booming!) But I have a couple of other options.
1. Let another (more local) fabricator build me some new back boxes but without the switching valves. The guy does stuff for historic Ferraris and newer Bentleys so he seems to know what he is doing. Work quality looks amazing! He says he can make it so its a bit louder than normal, but a bit quieter than full on banzai.

2. The local stainless bloke says he can cut out the valves sections completely and just weld in open pipe. This would effectively put me in sport mode 24/7

Option two is obviously waaaaaay cheaper than option 1

Anybody got any suggestions?

Andy, I have fitted MC exhaust pipes on my GT 4.2, which puts me in your solution #2 camp ie. sport mode 24/7

It is definitely bearable. I was afraid abt the noise level in the LT so I had bought the valve kit from Formula Dynamics over in the US. After 6months on full on exhaust, that valve kit is still in its box, sitting in my basement.

Another interesting perspective... I live in central London in a terraced house, w plenty of neighbors, and the car sleep in the street. Despite starting it every morning around 7am, none of my neighbors have sniped me or slashed my tyres yet.

So if I can handle it as a DD, and my neighbors can, I think you should be OK.

My only concern would be resale value. People will def expect the on/off noise option.

If nobody can fix your exhaust (which other members infer should be possible), you can always sell the "always on" old back boxes, and buy new ones from OEM. The net differential cost might not be too bad, as I really think you should get at £1000 for the old ones.
