Gransport First Impressions

Picked the car up from Marenellos, Egham today, first off I'd like to say how pleased I am with the service provided, it was a smooth and comprehensive handover with no unnecessary hanging around. Many thanks to Neil who knew the car well and delivered it in the condition promised. (Unveiling with a silk cover was a nice touch).

Condition: Well the car is pretty much mint, inside and out and the prep was all done very nicely. remember I had not seen the car prior to purchase, (or any Gransport for that matter), in the flesh so I was a little apprehensive. The Verde Goodwood paint job really suits this car and the Tan interior is a great match. All the manuals and service logs are in perfect order and the dealer has sent away the Maserati Warranty docs which I am delighted to be getting as I understand that the cover is pretty good.
The tan hide is in great order, no cracks or scuffs and all the switch gear works, there's no fading on any of the graphics.
I can't find a single negative issue to report thus far but I will have more daylight time with the car tomorrow.....

First Drive

This is the most nervous that a vehicle has ever made me feel and that's surprising. I've driven plenty of newer, more expensive cars but the fact that this is a Maserati coupled with the 4.2 under the hood certainly got me a bit edgy. There really is a sense of occasion when the start up procedure fires the engine, (even more so inside the delivery bay at Marenellos) and as I pottered out of the forecourt in bottlers auto mode it took about 10 seconds for the Gransport to completely overwhelm me with it's wow. The five miles or so to the M4 was all it took to get the better of the flappy paddle/throttle feathering change ups. The driving position is fantastic, seats are very comfortable and the visibility is amazing for a low(ish) profile coupe, that was a big surprise as it's not something that I've heard you long termers mention on the forum. It seemed to take around five minutes to get to Bristol where we pit stopped and I swapped cars with my wife to give her a turn in the GS. I have to say that following and being tailed by your wife in your new Maserati is pretty cool, it's easy to forget how good the car looks when you're cosseted inside and Mrs Slimnrp looks pretty fit in a sports car!

Once back in the drivers seat the rest of the journey flew by and got better and better as the roads became more familiar, the last ten miles to the house on windy b roads being particularly memorable!

Fuel consumption was around 70 litres for the 290 miles, can that be right, 20 mpg??!

Only discernible negatives are the higher than expected wind noise at motorway speed, (seems to be coming straight from the wing mirrors) and the dash board creek which I haven't had in recent years with Audis, Jags and the Lexus but to be honest it's easy to drown them out with the V8! Oh and the lights are poor but that again is coming from cars with xenons I guess...

Thanks to all for your kind words and advice; Pics to follow.....

Dead jealous I remember the day I picked mine up.

To address you negativities, I had xenons on my GS and they were fantastic. The wind noise well yes I can't argue with that but make sure your drivers window us closing correctly as this might be amplifying the issue.

The dash creak can be sorted with leather conditioner I feel. The dash top is very easy to remove, see the technical section for a full guide with pics.

Glad your pleased.

Glad you are pleased......God, didn't know you had seen or driven the car before you bought...Not sure I would be brave enough to do that.......Enjoy.

I guess you can see why most of us are still on this forum Slim! The sense of occasion, the smile and the noise, sorry , the sonorous outpourings from the exhaust, just never get old. I enjoy mine now more than when I first got it and I loved it then. I am sure you will too.

On the point of leather conditioner being applied to the dashboard, I was led to believe that only the seats are leather, do double check before applying anything!

The wind noise does disappear after 120.........;)

Nice write up...do enjoy, looking forward to the pics!

Take care in the wet though, more than a few have been caught out early on in ownership by tramping down ******* the right pedal in poor conditions!

Yup, a lovely sight...enjoy those few weeks of a visual and aural honeymoon.......:)

Also, if creaking coming from sides of dashboard where it meets the A pillar, silicone spray may be of use....maybe Loz can confirm this before you do anything?

Yes that does seem a little odd. Expect 12-15mpg more regularly.

Long distance i would have said 20mpg is about par for the course , ive even managed 23-24 in europe tank after tank of motorway miles , but town driving especially here in MK roundabout city i get around Pats estimation , but you cant put a price on the grin/kudos factor, special occasions demand special prices thats how i look at it

The best tankful I've had is 23mpg at a steady 75. My worst is 8.5 or 160 to the tank.

A good track day should see that down to around 6 Benny, you must try harder next time

Ah, but averaging 8.5 means that half the time I was less than 8.5! I reckon sub 6 is easily doable but I won't be doing it too often, but I'll enjoy it when I am! Me and a few neighbours are doing the 'Ring in Sept and a couple of us are thinking about splitting off on the way back so we can do the Stelvio, some of the other passes and some tunnels. Should see 5s somewhere in there! Can't wait.

Definately climbing Stelvio 2nd or 3rd time from the Swiss side that should easily be achieved hahaha, and its a dam site easier to control and get that arrse end hanging out , but i found the run down from Stelvio to Bormio a lot more challenging and interesting, wear some good sunglasses tho Benny , those window gapes in the tunnels can be a little daunting and strobe like , happy days
