I have my own little eco warrior, aged 11, who goes round turning off lights, turning down radiator valves and pressing eco buttons in any car that has one. She is concerned and would like me to sell all the cars and buy a Tesla or two to which I have pointed out that this is not quite as green as she might think but even so she is thinking the right way.

Perfectly acceptable and indeed encouraged. What I reject is the use of poster people and this is the case for Greta.

Yes
We have just been through (still going through) the largest house building project probably since the war and in our area not one new build has had any green energy supplied either by PV or pumps or wind power. Absolutely nothing except maybe loft insulation.
I can see it why cannot the powers that be?

Certainly the one thing we can do which has the greatest impact on global warming is to not have kids.

Knocks everything else into a cocked hat. But no one is telling that tale, nor wants to listen.

If that's the case, as I have not sired any offspring, I should treat myself to another V8?

That's because the builders don't care, at the moment it doesn't add value to the houses they build or make them more desirable, so why add it?
So it becomes the responsibility of the planning consent people, as they should have only given consent if the houses included PV or something.
That said, even that can be farcical. If you've ever seen new builds go up with literally two or three panels on them, that's because the planning people told them to include PV but didn't specify how much they should use. So the builder then puts on the smallest, cheapest system they can to tick the box.

Wanna swap kids? I have one that is the exact opposite.

The UN is the most effective body although not all nations engage.
It's a macro issue and although all our micro activities contribute it requires a big picture approach internationally with not only commitment but reward and deterrent.

The micro pales into insignificance compared to some nations policies. Although China and the USA and the former USSR are often sited as the big bad guys in encouraging fossil fuel exploitation I'm sure that other nations are still exploiting their coal and other carbon based fuel or elements that have huge ecological impact (Li et al)
Only when those nations feel the impact in their pockets will it have any effect eg an import duty on goods sourced from or through their activities will it have any effect.
I run my traction engine rarely. Finding Welsh dry steam coal is because difficult and more expensive.
One day running my GT will feel the same.
Time passes.

Why do supermarket turnips get wrapped in polythene?

I expect you'll find it significantly increases shelf life. You may well find it also reduces the need for cool storage / transport with its associated energy problem. I'm not saying it is but don't forget the Supermarket isn't going to get them wrapped unless there's some benefit. Even if it's just to make it look pretty....

Well, that's probably the most **** joke ever.

I read this today from a RIBA magazine which refreshingly lays much blame at architects’ doors. Even those who haven’t yet bought their Tesla. It basically says we could be measuring CO2 in terms of trips to the supermarket in full fat Range Rovers and that lo and behold there are many worse felons than the internal combustion engine. Now I feel a little less guilty taking the QP GTS for its Italian tune up this afternoon...1E2D4E96-30FD-4D88-BE15-2BC753723AE0.jpeg076C9633-97C9-4A89-9B3F-CFB9032C17FC.jpeg

Agreed. World population growth is the biggest threat to climate and hunger. Keep seeing TV ads asking me to donate to give 3rd world humans clean water, toilet, food etc, but the best gift would be a condom! Not politically correct, but true. We would all be starving and poor if we all had 6 kids to look after.

A shrill yoof tells me that if we all ate less meat, continuing damage to the planet would slow down appreciably due to the reduced impact of deforestation to make room for cattle plus lower methane emissions from burping cattle (yes, it's true). As an added bonus, eating less meat is healthy. Win-win. Yay.

Well there's a few things I remember being of that older generation. Plastic Bags - we used to have paper bags and paper carrier bags - however it was deemed that these were a) Damaging to the environment as they used trees and b) More cost effective to use plastic...........
Straws - so firstly we use alot of plastic straws. They used to be made of waxed paper and before that were made of ..............straw...........?? these are actually pointless anyway and not necessary to drink anything at all - just marketing hype (keep sugary drinks off expensive teeth (USA) and gaily coloured to add excitement to your drink.......

We keep on listening to the wrong people, people that have a vested interest in doing something different. Greta is a product of her parents marketing and the latest generation of kids. I note that they are insisting that we DO something positive for nature - but don't actually come up with much themselves.... and by the way they are part of the problem - ever been near to where an Extinction Rebellion rallye has taken place? I've seen cleaner pig styes. Been to a music festival of late - abandoned tents for gods sake and more plastic than you could believe.........

Its everyone's problem for sure - including Greta's....

Been reading up on CO2 emmissions - the case for concrete production doesn't read well at all - but it never gets a mention?

****** up world - and as for the mad dash towards an electric future for cars.................

I like a real fire crackling away, I like a V8 rumbling along (preferably in front driving rear wheels) though I am currently AMG and not Maserati

Just drove from my house in Llandudno to Aberdeen and back again. Its 434 miles - 1 tank of fuel - no electric vehicle I am aware of could do it in one hit? What do I do plan out my stops on what is already a 7.5 hour drive?

End of rant....... for now.

One thing I haven't seen is a comparison on the efficiency of land use for providing food on a cattle v plant basis? Assuming the land can support both / either?

Currently the worst deforestation in developing nations is to grow crops to turn into bio-fuels - nothing to do with cattle - everything to do with avoiding carbon based energy sources. No easy answer?

Except (sorry, I seem to have inherited the voice of reason) that farming fewer cattle has an impact on biodiversity which, well you can guess...

On what measure? Calories for consumption or something else? That's the 17th problem :D

Fewer, not none. And cutting down rainforest to make room for cattle has more of an impact on biodiversity.

PS - like I know what the **** I'm typing about.

Exactly: Define 'more'....

Oh and BTW eating less meat might be more healthy. In some circumstances. **** it. I need a drink....

This is extremely interesting and useful information. But, a brick facade or the steel in the Bloomberg building last for say, 100 years. And if there were 100,000 RRs being driven to the supermarket once a week for 100 years that would be..... 500 tonnes of CO2.

So it’s probably worth doing something about both.
