Gransport doesn't want to move!

Hi Guys,

Started washing my Gransport last Sunday in preparation for a nice journey up to Lincolnshire. After I'd washed it, it started snowing so I reversed her back into the garage and did not use the car all week, I stupidly and uncharacteristically pulled up the handbrake.

Got in to take her out today, started the car, released the handbrake. Pull away and the handbrake appears to unstick, then a meter later the car slam to a halt. I can reverse back to where I came from but that is about it! Hand brake lever is now complete slack.

Have just done a bit of a search and Loz mentions on the other Maserati forum that it could be pads coming adrift from the shoes.

Any advice much appreciated.

Sounds very much like it.......if at all possible do a strip down in situ...you can drive car with handbrake mechanism etc all taken off as long as cable etc tied up safely til you get you get shoes relined, plus you make well find other bits broken and damaged so you need to do a full check....2nd hand parts from David Askew as first stop otherwise maser prices for some bits stupid!

Good luck with fix......take a pic or two of what you find, a definite weak point on them

Exactly the same hand brake system as on the late 60's Alfa 105 series.......the parts look very similar too

Suppose Fiat thought if it worked well in the 60's It'll still work well 45 years later and it does;).....

Yeah...but the quality doesn't seem to have improved........still think they are bonding lining to shoes with horse glue......or is that illegal now?!

There must be more modern tech regarding the adhesive, but the basic parking brake design is a gem....
The problems arise in the MOT test when the idiot yanks the handbrake on the rollers trying to get a reading.....Its only designed to stop the vehicle moving wilst parked!

Just stripped down my shoes to find them in tact albeit clogged with dust. Now do I send them for relining or just clean them up and adjust?

The car is 10 years old and 38k miles. They are filthy but loads of meat on them and not scored at all.

On second thoughts I am just going to send them for relining. For the sake of £35 its not worth risking doing the job twice.

Gary, they will be on their way to you on Monday.

Check your power steering fluid .......if fluid low.......check power steering cooler just in front of radiator for tell tale leaks...or other leaks along the way either side of container
